Women in Science

Who We Are

Women in Science is a UC Berkeley-based student-run group that brings together graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty members for monthly meetings. Through informal discussions, presentations, and workshops, we discuss topics relating to success both in graduate school and in future careers.

Some recent meetings have focused on advice on giving an excellent job talk, writing a grant, obtaining dual faculty hires, negotiating, promoting confidence, mentoring, and exploring alternative careers to academia.

We intersperse informational meetings with informal discussions with distinguished UC Berkeley faculty members.

All are welcome, check back here for information on our next meeting

Mentorship

Lab mates, cohorts, or student-run groups become useful resources for starting graduate students.   We in IBWIS wanted to provide another avenue for graduate students to find support that might fall outside of a social or pre-existing network, and can offer more one-on-one interactions for more specific help.

If you have questions, need help with a particular problem/person, want someone to bounce ideas off, are seeking advice, this list offers a pool of people who would be happy to assist.  It is meant to serve as an informal way to establish mentorship relationships on an as-needed basis or that are more low maintenance.

These IB students have volunteered to answer questions and provide support to fellow grad students for 2-4 hours per month.  They have agreed to maintain confidentiality with any mentee who contacts them.

Obviously, this list is not meant to take the place of an advisor, or even a counselor.  We hope this opens up the possibility for people to ask questions and get support from fellow graduate students in IB.

If you are interested in volunteering your time as a mentor (preferably advanced to candidacy), contact Theresa Grieco to be added to the list.  (grieco [at] berkeley.edu)
