Gianfranco Giagni, director

Gianfranco Giagni is a man for all seasons, a former music critic who was Mauro Bolognini's assistant on the set of The Ferramonti Heritage, the 1976 film that won a prize for Dominique Sanda and a nomination for Bolognini. Giagni was just twenty-four at the time and understandably eager to experiment new forms of expression. In the late eighties Giagni created Mr. Fantasy, a musical programme for RAI television. He also started turning out one videoclip after another including many memorable ones like Loredana Berté's Mare d'inverno. In 1988 Giagni directed Il nido del ragno (The Spider Labyrinth) that was released theatrically in Italy and, for television, Valentina, based on Guido Crepax's cartoon character. In 1993 Giagni directed Rosabella: Orson Welles in Italy, a documentary about the American director's relationship with Italy.

Giagni's latest exploit is an ambitious one. Nella terra di nessuno (In No-Man's Land) is a thriller with a surprise ending that takes place in a high security prison during the years of Italian terrorism in the seventies. Ben Gazzara plays a lawyer and Maya Sansa is a jailed terrorist's sister. The film is based on the thriller by Nino Filastò entitled Three days in the life of Councillor Scalzi, about to be re-published by Mondadori.
