What's that strange creature to the left? Well it's an Honor Goat of course. During my four years at Haverford I had the privilege to run Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track on an incredible team. It was a huge sacrifice to live the life that was required to run at that level but I have no regrets, only that I couldn't have continued longer.
Right before I graduated college, I had this crazy idea that I needed to leave school with some sort of record. I wasn't fast enough to have my name up on the board in the fieldhouse with all of the 'normal' records. So two days before graduation I went out and ran 15 laps of the trail that circles the perimeter of Haverford's campus. Since the 35 miles or so didn't hurt so much and I was able to do it in 4:29:06 I decided to become an ultramarathoner while I was living in Germany. I dropped out of my first attempt at an official race just past the marathon point (marathon = approx. 3:30). In May of 2002 I ran the Rennsteiglauf through the mountains of Thüringen. The race started in Eisenach, the birthplace of Bach at an elevation of 100m, topped out at around 1000m at mile thirteen and then rolled pretty steadily between 800m and 1000m. I finished in just over 8 hours in the top third of the field, and was the top finisher from the United States (I destroyed that other guy).
