My hypothesis-MMORPGs are addicting because they allow players, who are dissatisfied with life to disembody themselves from the real world as an outlet of escape, was partly proven through extensive research and interviews. MMORPGs are addicting due to the characteristics of the game and the personal driving forces that keep an individual playing. These driving forces are both psychological and part dissatisfaction with life.
People start playing MMORPGs because of the attaction factors or alluring characteristics, such as the objects, and and activities in the game itself. However, the real addiction to these alluring games is caused by external psychological factors. The most alluring part of an MMORPG is character development. Allowing players to create their own character and have them advance and build a personality further increases the attachment and time they spend on advancing a character. The character is the main disembodying channel for gamers. Gamers put themselves in their characters shoes, for the duration of the game, becoming their characters. Also, from the interviews, it seems that the indefinite quality of these games also drive the individual to continue playing. Though not prevalent in my interviews, psychological disorders may increase the likelihood of addiction all substances.
The initiation of the game may be due to the attractive characteristics of the online role playing game, but dissatisfaction with life or a job, depression, a surplus of spare time will push the player to become addicted. The Flow Theory coincides with the "attraction" factors, while the Use and Gratification Theory coincides with the external "motivating" factors. Most people have social lives and obligations away from the game, which keeps them from being truly addicted to MMORPGs. Addiction to MMORPGs are not as detrimental to phsycial health as substance abuse, however, precautions still must be taken. Personal relationships, careers, and school progress can be affected from MMORPG addiction. For these individuals, who can prioritize their lives, manage their time, and social MMORPGs are simply entertainment.
