For those interested in some volunteering, there’s a group that does ivy pulling:

Hi All:

While I realize this is late notice, tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. we’ll

meet in the Grinnell Natural Area near the bike path bridge (just west of

the Life Sciences Addition) to finish the week off right- by killing

invasive ivy (and anything else that we deem invasive and/or not

“native”).

 

It’s a pleasant way to finish off a grueling week of desk-jockeying (for

those of us lucky enough to have cushy office jobs) and get that all-

important endorphin-high that you only get after straining to remove ivy

and the like.

 

This is the first of our “Spring ‘09 Second Friday Afternoon Ivy Hunt”

series. Put these dates on your calendars now:

Meet a 4:00, work like dogs ’til 5:00, clean-up and perhaps go for beers

if our other responsibilities allow.

 

Instruction, gloves and some tools are provided but the pros amongst us

Constituents and Lab
We will be holding lab sessions sometime within the next two weeks to find out the effects of the constituents.

Semester Overview

What’s Next
Monday next week is President’s Day. We will have no class. Just keep in mind some ideas for a name for the team. Stay tuned for lab scheduling. We will provide the materials.

Q: So I just have a quick question. What sort of time commitment do you think the project will take? Is it much time outside of the decal? Just curious:)

A: In the beginning we do not really do much (I would say an hour max per week for the first 2-4 weeks). As we get our construction materials and we have a design brainstormed, we may spend up to 2 hours per week in the lab for construction. These sessions are loosely optional and you don’t have to stay the entire time, but they are where things get done and where we coordinate our teamwork efforts. After about the first 4 weeks, we’ll be moving from meeting in Davis to our workspace in O’Brien for construction. There are also a few optional lab times, but that is still TBD. Passing the decal is mainly about effort and commitment (if you choose to register for the decal) and a short paper in the end. The decal is basically about the competition, so the decal time is team time.)

Today we presented a brief PowerPoint introduction about the decal, the team, and the competition.

Decal Registration
Both upper- and lower-division course control numbers are available (just e-mail us) if you would like to register for the P/NP decal. You do not have to be a part of the decal to be a part of the team and to participate in our activities, but if you’re going to be spending a lot of time with us anyway some extra credit can’t hurt.

Team
As was mentioned, the number of official registrants for the MidPac conference in Reno is limited. However, this does not mean you cannot go as a supporter and reveler. We’ll be sending out more details on the logistics once we get more information from the event organizers.

Deliverables
A few of you volunteered to do a little research on some of the constituents mentioned in the 2009 rules. We do not need a paper or anything like that. Select and note a common form of the item (i.e., Is it lemon juice from a bottle? If it’s from a bottle, what brand? If it’s the real thing, what type of lemon?) Do a little research to find out the effects, if any, of this constituent on the water (i.e., turbidity decreases, pH rises, water turns red and starts to smell like your feet) and the properties of the constituent (i.e., fatty, large size). See the rules for more judging criteria. If you would like to change your contaminant, help us with this research, or need some instruction, e-mail us or leave a comment to this post.

What Now?
For our next meeting we will be discussing what you found out and what we found out about the constituents. We will also be brainstorming on the design of the system and strategies to maximize our points. Finally, we will be visiting our workspace in O’Brien.
