The
UC Berkeley Korean American Student Organization, known as KASO,
was established during the summer of 1998. Over the years, KASO
has successfully delivered upon its promise of accomplishing three
main goals:
To increase awareness of Korean culture,
as well as issues affecting Korean American people, within the
University, as well as within the Bay Area.
To provide and actively participate in community service activities,
affecting Korean American people, as well as general people of
the Bay Area.
To promote fellowship among members, as well as other Korean American
people, through various social gatherings.
KASOs
fundamental, underlying goal is to represent Korean American students
on the UC Berkeley campus in a dignified manner, and to allow for
the recognition of the positive and beneficial differences that
Korean Americans make in society.
KASO
has contributed to the Korean-American community in the Bay Area
by providing a free tutoring and mentoring program for youth, known
as Korean American Tutoring and Mentoring Program, or "KATMP."
KATMP aims to assist the Korean American community by providing
youth with "big brothers" and "big sisters"
who can serve as teachers, friends, and counselors. In past years,
children have ranged in age from elementary to high school, and
many of the relationships formed have continued beyond the extent
of the program. KATMP is a valuable program that provides UC Berkeley
students with the opportunity to serve the community, while providing
youth with friends and mentors who can understand their adolescent
situations.
KASO
has distinguished itself not only in its commitment to community
service, but in its various social events as well. KASO promotes
a non-drinking policy and strongly believes that students can create
more affirmative relationships with one another without the incorporation
of alcohol. Some past events that KASO has organized include culture
festivals, potlucks, BBQs, scavenger hunts, broomball nights,
bowling nights, paintball outings, member retreats, and ski-trips.
Through
its diverse array of social activities and service projects, KASO
strives to continue its past accomplishments and to establish a
long-lasting presence in the Bay Area community.
