Yay Freedman!
The Israeli flag rose to the sound of “HaTikva” rising from the blended voices of hundreds of Israelis singing aloud the national anthem and waving blue and white flags in the open stadium, just minutes after Gal Freedman was honored with Israel’s first ever Olympic medal.
The Israeli flag rose in the center flanked by the Greek and British flags for Nikos Kaklamanakis and Nick Dempsey, who finished second a third consecutively.
“The whole country is very very proud of you,” Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said in a personal address the Israel’s first ever gold medal winner. “All the warmest blessings from all of us.”
