OVERVIEW OF RECENT IMMIGRATION OF ASIANS TO CALIFORNIA

According to 1990 Census(*1), the State of California bears more than 2.8 million of Asian or Pacific Islander population, the largest number out of 50 states of the United States. It occupies approximately 10 % of the state population. Compared to 1980 Census, the change is as much as 127%.

Especially, striking is the growth of Asian population in Santa Clara County, where Silicon Valley is situated, 8% to 17% from 1980 through 1990.

According to Edward Park's analysis (*2), "from 1970 to 1990, when the high technology industry experienced its greatest period of growth, the absolute number of Asian Americans in Silicon Valley grew six-fold, from 43,000 to 261,466."
