INTRODUCTION: THE ROLE OF ASIAN ENTREPRENEURS IN SILICON VALLEY

What notions would you come up with by hearing two words, "Silicon Valley"? Most of you might just think of the global hub of high technology industry in the South Bay Area of San Francisco. Others would think of the names of such mammoth companies as Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Apple Computers, Sun Microsystems, Oracle, SGI or Netscape.

Here, however, I won't tell you about these companies, but about companies started by Asian entrepreneurs. Most of them are venture companies. Why? Because I believe that it is Asian companies that are the vital virtual driving force of the computer industry of Silicon Valley in the 1990's. And because I believe that it is those companies that demonstrate the authenticity of Silicon Valley, the only place where anybody can make her/his dreams come true.

I would like, first, to explore the history of Silicon Valley, second, to overview the recent Asian Immigration to California, then, finally, to tell you the secrets and the hardships of being entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley, based on the interview to an entrepreneur who embodies the "Silicon Valley Spirits."
