Kenny's Pictures, Batch No. 7
This page will contain everything from Spring Break 2000 onward. It includes my drive
down to LA from Berkeley, Joshua Tree National Park, and the drive back up to Berkeley.
Other things will be added later.
The Trip Back to LA, March 2000
In an effort to avoid Interstate 5 on my routine trips back home from Berkeley, I've
decided to take alternate routes instead. This time, I chose the Western slope of the
Sierras as my alternate route. The details: CA-24 to Ygnacio Valley Rd. to Clayton Rd.
to Marsh Creek Rd. to CA-4 (through Modesto) to CA-49 (from Angels Camp through Sonora)
to CA-41 (down to Fresno) to CA-99 to I-5 back home. I have a mix of pictures from
645, 35mm, and digital formats.
- Angels Camp
CA-4 freeway sign
One of the major routes I took along this trip; it's a good way of beginning the story
with this picture. (Digital, 46.7 KB)
- Sonora
Building
I really liked this picture of the side of a building. It's made out of brick and has
some old paint on it. It's probably from the Gold Rush era. (Digital, 70.6 KB)
- Cool Tree
I found this tree next to a lake I passed along CA-49. It looks pretty nice and I really
like the colors of the branches. Too bad my scanner can't pick up all the beauty
of the actual slide. (RVP645, 101 KB)
- Fresno CA-41
and CA-99 split freeway sign
From here it was straight driving on CA-99 back home. (Digital, 14.9 KB)
Joshua Tree National Park, March 2000
A couple of us (well, me) wanted to actually go out and do something instead
of staying at home for the entire break. So we went traveling to Joshua
Tree NP. Details of the trip: day one- CA-22, CA-55, CA-91, I-215, CA-60, I-10
to Cabazon to shop at the outlet stores, then CA-111 through Palm Springs and Indio,
then to JTNP, ending in Twentynine Palms; day two- through JTNP, CA-195, CA-86 (Salton
Sea), CA-78 (Anza-Borrego Desert State Park), CA-79, CA-76 (two missions), Oceanside, then
back home.

Lucy and me at the Key Overlook Point
It was a pretty hazy day, but they say that from this point about 5200 feet high, you
can see all the way to the Salton Sea. But not that day.

-
Jeff looking from Key Point
I'd say it's a pretty decent picture of Jeff. (RDP35, 51.1 KB)

The Trip Back to Berkeley, April 2000
This trip was lots of fun but somewhat punishing. I left too late because of Daylight
Savings Time, so that didn't help things. I decided to travel through the Eastern Sierra
Mountains, so I took US-395 for most of the way. It's funny because along the way, I don't
think I've ever seen so many SUV's on the road at once. They were all going the opposite
direction, so I'm assuming they were coming back from Mammoth Mountain. One after another,
these gas-guzzling SUV's that might never tread upon one
granule of dirt were returning to their suburban enclaves in Los Angeles. Nevertheless,
traffic going up was light, and it was a great photo opportunity. The details of the trip:
I-405, I-5, CA-14, US-395, CA-89, US-50, I-80.
- Eastern Sierra
Foothills
This was taken from the Manzanar Japanese Internment Camp. It's off of US-395. There's
not much left anymore, but it was interesting to see how big the camp was. (RVP645, 55.5 KB)
- The Tour Path
in Manzanar
To tour the site, you actually have to drive along the dirt paths because it is that
big. This was along the northern boundary of the camp. (RDP35, 68.9 KB)
- The Memorial
Plaque at Manzanar
You really can't see it, but the plaque designates Manzanar as a National Historic Site in
1986. The plaque is located at the entrance of the site. (RVP645, 74.9 KB)
- Silver Lake I
Beautiful picture of Silver Lake, along the June Lake Loop off of US-395. It's just
a pity that this scan doesn't convey the true beauty of the slide and especially of the
actual lake. (RVP645, 64.1 KB)
- Silver Lake II
The same picture on 35mm Provia F. By this time it was late afternoon, and I hadn't gone to
Mono Lake yet! (RDP35, 53.5 KB)
