Kenny's Pictures, Batch No. 8
This is the much anticipated page that begins at the beginning of summer break and the Memorial Day trip, then goes on to the China trip. The China trip for the summer begins with the Tianjin trip, and includes the EAP trip to Chengde and the Great Wall. The two week summer break trip will not be included because I didn't take too many pictures with my digital camera, so you'll have to wait until I get my slides/negs scanned to see those. But there are undoubtedly some nice pictures in that group!
- Theresa and me
We're at Zachary's celebrating the end of yet another school year! Theresa just came back from her semester in DC. (42.8 KB)
Memorial Day weekend trip, May 2000
There are so many things that I still wanted to do when I was still up in Berkeley. One of them was to go up and explore the northern section of California. This territory is very different from the urban sections of California like LA and SF, and also different from the agricultural powerhouse otherwise known as the Central Valley. Up here, it's much more like Oregon or the East, with people sitting on their porches and fishing. The trip went through some major points, starting off in Redding, Lake Whiskeytown, Weaverville, Mt. Shasta and Shasta Lake, Crater Lake, Lava Beds NM, Burney Falls SMP, Lassen NP, and Sacramento. I went with my good friend Charlotte (who was prepared for everything). All of these pictures are done in digital format. I have yet to scan in my 645 or 35mm slides.
- Charlotte with my car by Lake Whiskeytown
We found this great picnic spot by the lake and ate out of the cooler. Mmm, what delicious sandwiches we made! (85.1 KB)
- Charlotte writing letters
Something that Charlotte did a lot, especially all those thank you letters to people who wished her happy graduation wishes. This was at a picnic table by Lake Shasta. (49.5 KB)
- The City of Weed
This city is just so funny... a city called Weed. What were the city fathers smoking? (46.5 KB)
- Charlotte going into a cave
This was so fun - exploring caves with only a flashlight (and me armed with my tripod and cameras). (93.3 KB)
- Charlotte in a cave
A nice little picture spot in a cave. (79.9 KB)
- Me outside of a cave
By the end of the cave explorations, we were getting pretty scared, because there was no one else around and it was dark! (33.2 KB)
- Crater Lake National Park
Just the sign - we actually went there twice: the first day it was foggy and you couldn't see the lake!!! But we came back and boy was it beautiful! (84.6 KB)
- Crater Lake Postcard-Perfect Picture
This is undoubtedly my favorite picture from this trip. I have it on digital, 645, and 35mm formats. I was going to take more, but some guy said that I was in an illegal part of the park. Oh well, it was worth it. (83.1 KB)
- A barn in Northeastern California
We stopped to get our bearings straight, and came across this nifty barn. (42.4 KB)
- Burney Falls
I liked this place a lot too, because I love waterfalls. I have some great ones with the water flowing like ribbons because of a slow exposure setting, but they're all in slides and I haven't had the chance to scan them. (78.3 KB)
- "Quenched Blobs"
You've got to hand it to the scientists at Lassen NP - coming up with these names for lava formations. Blobs indeed. (97.7 KB)
- Charlotte in the car again
We're just kind of relaxing at the cool plateau at the foot of Mount Lassen. (60.2 KB)
- Sierra Nevada Brewery
Chico was along the way back to Sacramento, and look what we came across... (50.9 KB)
- Enjoying each other's company
We splurged the last night and stayed at the Sheraton in Sacramento (where we stayed for We the People back in senior year of HS). We had some great Gewürztraminer. (43.0 KB)
Arrival in China, June 2000
Here are some of my few digital pictures of China. There are also a lot of pictures from the first week of EAP that are on prints.

What I see outside my room at Jimen Hotel. Ah, Jimen. (53.0 KB)
Trip to Tianjin, Mid-July 2000
This was our first trip outside of Beijing by ourselves. It was relatively close: Tianjin is only a one and a half hour train ride away. Some other people went to Beidaihe, which was also very fun (probably much more fun that Tianjin). There really wasn't much to do in Tianjin, but it was great fun hanging out with some EAP buddies. We originally started off with 17 people, but we split up to make it easier to organize. Again, these pictures are all taken with the digital camera.
- Mimi on a lamp
Tianjin has a lot of European architecture from the concession era, and here is Mimi posing with one of the relics from that era. (68.7 KB)
- Mimi hanging off of a pole
Mimi, ever the photogenic one, poses for the camera on a street in Tianjin. (72.3 KB)
- Rowing around in Tianjin
We rode in the duck-boats. Unfortunately, there were a lot of bugs. But it was fun paddling and hoping that the wake of the speedboat wouldn't make us tip over. (38.5 KB)
- Diana with her corn
Exploring the night market of Tianjin, we came across the food market. Here, Diana eats her favorite corn. (38.3 KB)
- Stinky Tofu
Getting some more food in Tianjin. (67.6 KB)
- Next to the Tofu stand
Here are (l-r) Diana, Kate, and Lisa. (58.5 KB)
- After a full day at McDonald's
McDonald's is like a haven of Westernness in China; we always find ourselves there. Here are (l-r) Diana, Elaine, and Sean. (92.5 KB)
Trip to Shidu, Mid-July 2000
The next weekend, I was still feeling a little restless being in Beijing, so I thought about going to a nearby area to explore. Cali mentioned Shidu, so that's where I went. Pei-jej, Andrew, Bich, and Pearl also came along. It was a great trip and I got to know them all a little bit better.
- Me in a tight spot
A narrow tunnel was one of the attractions of a park in Shidu. (56.8 KB)
- A group of four
We're at a rock that's also an attraction. From 1:00 (clockwise): Pearl, Pei-jej, Bich, and Andrew. (64.4 KB)
- That Rock
This is the rock that we climbed up to in 95 degree heat. (97.4 KB)
- The Great Fall
Pei-jej and Pearl were trying to change boats, and they both fell into the water! (40.7 KB)
- Pei-jej and Andrew
They're on a reed boat like those in Guilin. They say that Shidu is Beijing's answer to Guilin. (76.9 KB)
- Pei-jej and me
Now we're on the boat. I was reluctant to go on, liking the safety of the duck, but I didn't fall in. (87.6 KB)
Random EAP pictures, July 2000
Here are some pictures that were taken throughout the EAP summer session, and I don't know where to put them except to group them into a section all by themselves.
- Our summer class
This is the classroom at Beishida where we had class. Here are the intermediate and advanced level classes waiting to take their oral exams. (51.2 KB)
- Diana and Nancy
A nice picture of them posing in front of the chalkboard. (32.6 KB)
- Before leaving for a club
Here are some of us getting ready to go party! (51.5 KB)
EAP Trip to Chengde, Late-July 2000
This trip was so fun! We started off at the Jingshanling section of the Great Wall, and then spent a night at a farming village, and then had a great time at Chengde, about 6 hours north of Beijing. This is also where I celebrated my 21st birthday, and what a party that was. Thankfully, I don't have any digital pictures of that night - much to incriminating. Nevertheless, this weekend was magical and we made some great memories.
- A group of six
Here we are at the hotel in Jingshanling. From 12:00 (clockwise): Matt, Terry, Andrew Au, me, Andrew Aing, and Ben. (56.6 KB)
- Setting up the tents
We thought it would be a great experience to sleep on the Great Wall, so we did. It was a nice night, although a little humid. We sang and told stories on the Wall, it was cool. (45.3 KB)
- Sleeping on the Wall, I
This one has me in it =). (52.4 KB)
