Kenny's Pictures, Batch No. 9
The summer is over, and school has started. This batch of pictures includes most of the
trips that were taken during Fall semester 2000. I will begin with the Inner Mongolia Trip at the end of September, then the Korea Trip at the beginning of October, the EAP trip to Shanxi province, the Nanjing/Huangshan/Shanghai trip, the Las Vegas trip, as well as of other fun activities. There are some trips where I didn't take my digital camera, so you'll have to see my photo album for those activities!
Inner Mongolia Trip, Late-September 2000
This is the first EAP sponsored trip that we took this semester. Everything was paid for, technically, from our own pockets. It was really nice not having to think about where to stay or where to eat, kind of like going with a tour. Except this one was much more fun, because it was with all our EAP friends. We left Beijing on Sept. 21st by a night train to Hohhot. From there we took a bus to the Grasslands, where we stayed overnight. The next day we took the bus to the Singing-sand Desert, and then stayed at Baotou. On the last day we went back to Hohhot and went to the spots there, then boarding a night train back to Beijing. It was a very fun-filled four days.
- Steph with my bag
I had the [bad] judgement of leaving my camera bag and digital camera with these people, and this is just one of the strange sequence of pictures with my bag. Some of them were too abusive to show... (82.2 KB)

Korea Trip, Early-October 2000
October 1st is China's National Day - commemorating the founding of the People's Republic of China. What this means to us is one week vacation. And we celebrated! We went to Tiananmen on October 1st to see the festivities, and then on October 3rd Andrew, Pong, Pei-jej, and I went to Korea on our five-day excursion. The first day was basically all on the plane or in the airport going to the island of Cheju. On Cheju the next day we went to some sights on the beach as well as the volcano. The next day we spent in Pusan and the ancient capital of Kyongju. And the next two days we spent in Seoul, Korea's capital. The days were packed with activities and we were sad we didn't have more time, but it was lots of fun!

Wangfujing/Chaoyangmen on Friday the 13th, October 2000
We went to Wangfujing to get facials, I don't exactly know why, but it was an interesting experience, I guess. Even though I arrived an hour late because of heavy traffic on the 331 bus line to the subway from Beida, I got one too. Afterwards, we went to sing karaoke out by Chaoyangmen, and that was lots of fun. Here are some of the pictures from that night, which happened to be Friday the 13th.

Sarah Chang/Budapest Orchestra Concert, October 2000,
One Picture from Guilin, August 2000
We went to see the world-famous violinist in Beijing in October. Here are some of the pictures from that night. We all dressed up to watch her play, and we were all very impressed. The venue was at the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Zhongshan Park next to Tiananmen and the Forbidden City. Then there is one picture from Guilin that I took with my digital camera of a print. It didn't really belong anywhere else, so I'll put it here.
- Kathy and me
Here we are posing in front of the front door to the Forbidden City. It was already fairly dark outside, so we look a little odd (because of Photoshop). (39.6 KB)

Shanxi Province Trip, Late-October 2000
We left on a night train bound for Taiyuan, Shanxi, on Friday night. We were only there for two days, because there really isn't that much to see there in the Taiyuan area. So on Saturday we went to the place where they filmed "The Raising of the Red Lantern" - the place is a large residence that used to be the house of a rich merchant. Then we went to Pingyao and explored the ancient city walls and the charming streetscenes. On Sunday we went to Jingci Temple, which wasn't really that much like the usual temples we visit. This one was more like a park, and it was beautiful. That evening, we went back to Beijing on the train. It was actually a fairly relaxing trip, even though my shoulders hurt from carrying all my camera equipment.
- On the Bus
Here is the bus that we were all on in Shanxi. As you can see, general mayhem ensues. (47.3 KB)
- On the Pingyao Wall
This wall was built during the Ming Dynasty. And here are a bunch of us on it, walking, walking... (43.3 KB)

Nanjing-Huangshan-Shanghai Trip, November 2000
In mid-November, after the Beishida people were done with their finals, we all took a trip southward to the Shanghai area. Their were two groups: one to Nanjing and Huangshan, and another straight to Shanghai. I was on the first one. Nanjing was a great city to begin the trip. Pei-jej, Andrew and I visited Sun Yat-sen's tomb, the Nanjing Massacre museum, and other museums and points of interest. Next was Hunagshan, a mountain famed for its beauty. Unfortunately, since it was November and the mountain was fogged in, there wasn't much to see there. In Shanghai we rejoined with the other group and went to Zhouzhuang (kind of like the "Chinese Venice"). In Shanghai we took in the modernness and sights, and before we knew it it was time to go back to Beijing.
- The Huangshan Three
Pei-jej, me, and Andrew are enjoying a break at the top of the fogged-in Huangshan. (63.6 KB)

- Nanjing Dong Lu
This is the main pedestrian shopping zone in Shanghai. (54.4 KB)
- Pudong New Zone at night
A new part of town, this was built after the economic reforms of 1990. It has great-looking new buildings and that inverted hypodermic needle otherwise known as the "Oriental Pearl". (41.9 KB)
Winter Break - Las Vegas Trip, January 2001
Being in China during the first half of my 21st year is somewhat frustrating. The twenty-first is always such a big deal in the US, because that's the age that you really can do anything legal. But in China, you're already legal (at least for alcohol). Because of this, it seemed only logical to mke a trip to the city that historically won't let you do anything unless you're 21. A carload of us went to Las Vegas for the weekend and had a great time losing money and sipping champagne while getting fat from the buffets. It was grand. Other things that we did over Winter Break include going to the just-opened Downtown Disney, visiting the Santa Monica 3rd St. Prominade, and making a trip to Berkeley.
- Downtown Disney
I got off the plane not too long before this and went out with a couple of friends to Downtown Disney. It was similar to Universal Citywalk, but much closer. (47.6 KB)
- Santa Monica 3rd St. Prominade
The night before going to Las Vegas, I went up to UCLA to visit my friends. Here are (l-r) me, Lucy, and Jeff. (49.7 KB)
- Four of us at the Venetian
Once we arrived, we went further down the Strip. These are some EAP friends, (l-r) Andrew Pong, Kathy, Pei-jej, and me. (72.6 KB)
- At Caesar's Palace Shopping
Me and Pei-jej went shopping at Caesar's and met Pinky and the Brain. (53.8 KB)
- Walking along the Strip
Since driving in LV is usually bad, we walked along the Strip a lot. Here are a couple of us walking back to the hotel where our car was parked. (61.8 KB)
- Neil in Las Vegas
Neil celebrated his 21st birthday in Las Vegas with some Stanford friends, and coincidentally we bumped into each other in that big city. (40.5 KB)
- At Red Rock Canyon
To escape the casinos, we went to see the natural beauty of Las Vegas at Red Rock Canyon. Here are me and Pei-jej. (43.7 KB)
