Welcome to the first general meeting of the spring semester!

History…late 1980s, a Lao and Mien UCB student formed LASR

Mission: to establish an organization that will facilitate interaction and strengthen solidarity among Laotian students and those interested in the Laotian community, raise attention to Laotian culture, and enhance Laotian community awareness and higher education.

Our numbers: Laotians (Mien, Hmong, Lao) make less than 1% of student body at UCB

Goals of LASR: to establish Laotian awareness, provide academic and social support, outreach to Laotian communities, and promote higher education

Last semester’s events: Sports Night, Documentary Night, Laotian Awareness Day, Open Mic Night, Ha-lao-ween Party, Thanksgiving Potluck, Basketbrawl Tournament

Member introductions:
Aline Xayasouk, Chinda Xayarath, Abraham Moua, Panhia Moua, Srida Moua, Will Clayton, Mary Yang, Ue Yang, Rebecca Sheng Lee, Pa Lee, Laura Thammavong, Seng Vang, Aleta Rattanasith, Monica Thammarath, Sue Vang.

ICE-BREAKER: Egg, Chicken, Eagle, Dinosaur game. Breaking out of our shells through conversations with people we don’t know.

TABLING: weekly tabling 10-2 at Sproul. Come join officers in tabling. Look for us at Sproul, come hang out, and promote LASR! Email May at maykyang@berkeley.edu for more info or to sign up to table.

T-SHIRTS/SWEATSHIRTS: T-shirts (black with purple print) designed by Vida Vongvanith. $10 each. Sweatshirt price TBD. Cash/checks. Contact Yer Yang at yeryang87@berkeley.edu.

LASR BUTTONS: designed by Romy, 2 for $1.

UPCOMING EVENTS

MENTORING: Will and Nency will pair upper-classmen w/ lower-classmen based on a questionnaire that they will develop soon.

FIRST LASR EVENT!!!
Super Bowl Social at Sue’s place! February 5th 2006. BBQ and snacks! Expect an email soon.

Upcoming Event: Retreat at Tahoe! February 17th-20th Holiday Weekend, 3 nights
If 30 people sign up = $60 per person (contact Yer yeryang87@berkeley.edu); price per person will go down if more people go
Friends are invited! We need cars too.

Culture Show planned for April (coordinator Jerry jerrysithiphone@berkeley.edu)
Planning for this event will begin next week

Officer Meetings
held Tuesdays 6:30-7:30p; meet in front of Dwinelle
members, esp those who can’t make it to general meetings, are invited to attend too to help with the planning

Will Clayton wants to start up an indoor soccer intramural team soon. Looking for someone who has at least some experience in sports. Contact him at wclayton@berkeley.edu.
