Research Experience

LS9, Inc. (April 2008 to present). Senior Scientist, leading the directed evolution of proteins used to produce renewable petroleum through microbial fermentation.

Cornell University, Baker Institute for Animal Health (February 2007 to April 2008). Postdoctoral Associate with Dr. John Parker, employing proteomic methods to characterize the role of host cell proteins in reovirus replication and assembly, and studying the proapoptotic function of the mu1 protein.

Agave BioSystems (June 2003 to February 2007). Senior Scientist, Principal Investigator in the development of a MALDI-based drug discovery platform, and in the directed evolution of enzymes for use as immunocompatible bioscavengers against organophosphorus nerve agents.

The Scripps Research Institute, Department of Chemistry (June 2000 to June 2003). Postdoctoral Research Associate in the laboratory of Dr. Kim Janda, applied phage display to identify antibodies against a variety of tumor-associated markers and small molecular targets. Also initiated the laboratory's research program investigating bacterial quorum sensing mechanisms and synthesis of signaling molecules.

University of California, Berkeley; Department of Molecular & Cell Biology (Fall 1993 to Spring 2000). Graduate Student Researcher, Postdoctoral Researcher in the laboratory of Dr. Loy Volkman, characterized the regulation and activation of V-CATH, a cysteine protease encoded by the baculovirus AcMNPV.

Cornell University; Section of Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology (Fall 1991 to Fall 1992). Undergraduate Researcher in the laboratory of Dr. P. Andrew Karplus, optimized the purification and crystallization of jack bean urease, and developed assays to measure the activity of urease crystals.

Hybritech, Inc.; Immunobiology Division (Summer 1991). Research Assistant, was responsible for producing, selecting, and evaluating stably transformed cell lines producing monoclonal antibodies.

Teaching Experience

University of California, Berkeley; Department of Molecular & Cell Biology (Fall 1995). Graduate Student Instructor for General Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Laboratory. Supervised students in laboratory, graded lab reports, developed and conducte d oral quizzes.

University of California, Berkeley; Department of Molecular & Cell Biology (Fall 1994). Graduate Student Instructor for Survey of the Principles of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Led weekly discussion sections, developed problem sets and quizzes.

Mission Bay High School; San Diego, California (Spring 1993). Teaching Assistant for Chemistry and Geometry. Assisted in laboratory preparation, presented lectures, provided instruction to individual students.

Cornell University; Section of Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology (Fall 1992). Reader for Molecular Biology. Assisted in the development of problem sets, graded examinations and problem sets.
