They’re changing the GRE!

Miscellaneous — lillianc on December 30, 2006 at 8:41 pm

“They” being ETS.

Here are the changes in short from Princeton Review.

It seems they are going back to set testing dates and scrapping the adaptive testing format (question difficulty adjusted as you go). HMM. I cannot decide which is worse.

“4+” hours though?? Seriously.

Farewell Fall 2006

Miscellaneous — lillianc on December 20, 2006 at 11:20 am

It’s almost 2007! Wow.

So. Things I’ve already forgotten heading into winter break: parent contribution appeal form and cleaning the fridge (not only will it be moldy this time, but there will be plenty of rotten meat to play with). Boo. Stupid university and their need to kick us out. I complain about this every year. I feel I have the right to, since we pay for December even though we’re not allowed in the building. I should stick all that rotten meat in each and every administrative mailbox. I don’t think I have enough.

Anyways, I’ll be back to spotty internet for about a month. There’s the possibility of dial up. Maybe.

I’m still getting over my illness. I’ve been blowing my nose straight for about 3 days now to a point that it’s crusted over in dry, irritated skin. Attractive, I know.

Hmm, here’s a wrap up of my classes (just for fun):

EDIT: Just kidding. I appreciate my pretty grades this semester and would rather not gripe about anything I might regret later (i.e. professors)…because, you know, the internet is public domain and, yes, Google indexes all.

I just saw Sen. Obama on that Conan show. He is a charming, handsome man.

Goooodnight.

Achoo…

Toilet Paper

I’m so tired from all this blowing-the-nose business.

In fact, my runny nose “consumed” a whole roll of toilet paper today. My precious germs are distributed all over Unit 2 in wet wads of tissue.

Now to find another roll…

Appreciation Part II

Miscellaneous — lillianc on December 16, 2006 at 5:41 pm

Hi Lillian - the chocolates were very sweet (no pun intended) and much appreciated! Sorry I didn’t get an email off before to thank you - THANK YOU!

That made my day. :) I had some pretty awesome GSIs this semester. It makes me want to be a grad student.

I can’t wait to start studying for the GRE’s!…and I’m only being slightly sarcastic. The humdrum routine of this semester is starting to bore me. Oh, ever elusive “greener grass”, why must you always be on “the other side”?

[Article] Keeping Ears Clean (a question that I find myself pondering frequently)

News — lillianc on December 15, 2006 at 12:49 pm

What’s the best way to get rid of ear wax?

June 5, 2000 — One thing you definitely don’t want to do is get rid of all your earwax. Earwax isn’t dirt. It’s a normal secretion that protects your ear, just the way other kinds of wax protect your car.

If water gets in your ear canal — while you’re swimming or taking a shower, for instance — earwax will cause the water to bead up and move away from your eardrum. Then the slipperiness of the wax encourages the water to run out of the canal. In addition, earwax is slightly acidic, which discourages bacterial or fungal growth in the moist, dark ear canal. Without earwax, it would be much harder to avoid ear infections.

[Article] H.I.V. Risk Halved by Circumcision, U.S. Agency Finds

December 14, 2006

Circumcision appears to reduce a man’s risk of contracting AIDS from heterosexual sex by half, United States government health officials said yesterday, and the directors of the two largest funds for fighting the disease said they would consider paying for circumcisions in high-risk countries.

The announcement was made by officials of the National Institutes of Health as they halted two clinical trials, in Kenya and Uganda, on the ground that not offering circumcision to all the men taking part would be unethical. The success of the trials confirmed a study done last year in South Africa.

Finals Blues

Miscellaneous — lillianc on December 12, 2006 at 10:30 pm

Well, not really blues. More like I’m sick. The one year I’m not in a massive state of panic and I get sick. Figures.

Twice in one semester. This is a record number of illnesses for my immune system. My body’s failing me. >.<

Appreciation

Thank you….

I love seeing appreciation.

That is why I love giving gifts. I love it more than receiving gifts. When I get a gift I feel uncomfortable (especially if I’m not sure what to do with it). Sure, I say “thanks”, but really, that doesn’t sum up how touched I might feel. I just become a big ball of awkward.

Giving gifts though…gah, it makes my day. That is why I need to be financially well off in my future career (not to mention, living sustainable ain’t always so cheap).

What I love most though is seeing the appreciation. Maybe this is some messed up way of making up for my own failures, but I love hearing the “thanks” and seeing the smile (especially if I thought it was an especially creative gift). It gives me a sense of closure. I even get nervous anticipating the response, complete with shaky hands and stomach butterflies.

Anyways, the whole point of this excessively loose train of thought was my inability to give 2 of my GSI’s end of the semester gifts in person. I avoided giving them in class for fear of being a “brown noser” (yeah, so maybe I am), but leaving them at their box/office just doesn’t give the same sense of closure. I don’t even know if they got it!

Okay, they probably think I’m a suck up. :|

Okay, as is plainly obvious, this has been on my mind for awhile.

Dammit, I need to study.

Anyways, here’s an excessively cute cat to make up for the lack of coherency in this entry.

Gender bias ‘increases poverty’

Palestinian women and children

Children of women-headed households eat better food, Unicef says

Inequality at home between men and women leads to poorer health for the children and greater poverty for the family, says a new study. The UN children’s agency, Unicef, found that where women are excluded from family decisions, children are more likely to be under-nourished.

There would be 13m fewer malnourished children in South Asia if women had an equal say in the family, Unicef said.

Unicef surveyed family decision-making in 30 countries around the world.

Their chief finding is that equality between men and women is essential to lowering poverty and improving health, especially of children, in developing countries.

The conclusions are contained in the agency’s State of the World’s Children 2007 report.

Winter Hormonal Peak

Miscellaneous — lillianc on December 8, 2006 at 3:47 pm

I don’t remember who first told me that winter brings a rise in the coupling of single persons due to the need for a cuddling partner (aka body heat). I’ve always wondered if that comes with increased hormone fluctuations. I can’t seem to find any sort of scientific study to confirm these suspicions though.

Well, anyways, I thought about this while avoiding my work and daydreaming of attractive people. :) I always have a higher yearning to date around this time. This might be due more to my mental rejection of school related work then any hormone spikes.

As this time of the semester usually indicates, I have a massive amount of work I am all too tempted to avoid. I still need to do my study abroad application and there’s…well, finals. I have no idea what winter break will bring seeing as how I haven’t applied for any sort of money-earning activities. :| My goal is to maintain muscle strength. I hate that just a mere 2 weeks of inactivity puts one “out of shape”. I would like to go down to SoCal and spend New Year’s with Jenn, Jackie, Michael and Anca, but an impending dental bill and study abroad plans make plane tickets inaccessible at the moment. Not to mention, I’ve decided not to accept my loans in hopes that my job will cover rent. *finger crossed*

So, tonight is a belated celebration with Michael for his 24th birthday, probably consisting of dinner and a Borat screening (after being rejected from the theater last time…pfft “sold out”).

Omg, classes are over…(delayed reaction due to a week of sleep deprivation)
