[Article] Student Wants to ‘Rent’ a Girlfriend

Hehehe (found courtesy of Digg).

On a side note, these ERG problem sets are a major time vacuum. Needless to say, I’ve met many new people this week in my struggle to finish one. :)

Posters & Kuler

Just as a testament to what kind of art I like, cool posters:

I also enjoy color. Here is a pretty little flash site by Adobe to explore color palettes:

Browsing ThinkGeek.com (aka procrastinating)

Miscellaneous — lillianc on January 23, 2007 at 9:49 pm

Hehehehe. Cool, cool and awesome. I want a water powered clock!

I was tempted to take the weblog decal to practice writing better entries, but really, it sounds too hardcore. Instead, I am taking the highly recommended female sexuality. Today was the first (awkward) “sexion”. I hope I know what I’m getting into. I gave up conversational Cantonese for it!

(Sort of) Finalized class schedule:

  • Energy and Resources Group 102: Quantitative Aspects of Global Environmental Problem Solving (I am currently wrinkling my forehead over the problem set.)
  • Enviromental Sciences 100: Introduction to Methods of Environmental Science
  • Integrative Biology C100: Communicating Ocean Science
  • Womens Studies 198: Female Sexuality
  • Physical Education 2: Intermediate Yoga (I never thought I’d work up a sweat lying on a mat)

Anyways…

[Article] Surviving (and thriving) on $12,000 a year

News — lillianc on January 11, 2007 at 1:09 pm

By Donna Freedman

I’ll be living on just over $1,000 a month this year. That doesn’t sound like much — and it isn’t — yet I plan not just to live on it, but to build a savings account.

Winter Break

Miscellaneous, Movies — lillianc on January 8, 2007 at 5:50 pm

So. School Classes start on the 16th. The word school makes me think of children. We are more mature than that, no? I think so. Well, according to my California ID at least. I feel like such a kid without a driver’s license.

I’ve accomplished many things this winter break. Many of which I can’t remember. I got a bike I haven’t ridden and probably won’t for the next 6 months or so. I refuse to do so without a helmet and unfortunately mine is lost somewhere amidst a pile of boxes. No matter. It’s not as if I could easily transport it back to Berkeley anyhow. Hmm, what else. I cracked open one of those GRE books. Yuck. I now remember why the verbal portion of the SAT…sucks (I wonder if that’s an SAT word). I did however read up on getting rich (I’ve discovered a new love for personal finance blogs)…or at least being financially stable. I also did some research on my financial aid. Yes, I now know the difference between a Perkins and a Direct loan. Whoopee me. It’s only taken me…oh, 3.5 years to figure that out. I started my daunting End of the Semester report for work. 5 hours down. Probably another 5 (bazillion) more to go. I looked up jobs through workstudy, the Career Center and (sketchy) online websites (a sad, sad sight for me). I found research projects to apply for in the spring. I’m so excited about research I wish I could just skip the whole application/interview process. Let me be your free undergraduate labor dammit! Okay so, what else. I had some quality time with spreadsheets planning everyone’s shifts for the remainder of the semester. Spring break, you will not catch me off guard…same goes to you MLK Jr. Day and Presiden’t s Day. *shakes fist at calendar* I managed to clean out both my inboxes (note that I have 3)…mostly. However, I did sign up for a butt ton of mailing lists to balance the whole cleaning business. I will not miss another good job opportunity!…hopefully. Oh hey, I even managed to buy a textbook. Only one more to purchase and I’m probably doing it tomorrow. I’m keeping my streak of buying my books for less than 50% their list price. Score.

Fun things. Hm. I just watched “Akeelah and the Bee”, an accidental discovery. My mom found it in her mail and thought it was an AOL CD. Turns out, someone was returning it to Blockbuster through the mail. Whoops. I’ll make sure that gets dropped off. Cute, tweeny movie. Very predictable and very feel good. I loved the little Latino boy. Haha, so cute. He’s probably my age. Haha, not funny. Public education makes me sad. I also read a book (haven’t done that in awhile). “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team” by *can’t remember” Lencioni. Sounds fascinating huh? My mom got it from work. I actually really enjoyed it. The author basically, through a story, teaches about the five main reasons teams fail. There’s even an summary lesson at the end.

People visited (in order of visit). Laurie. We went beading in Davis again. I also had a slice of pizza…somewhere, not Woodstock’s or Steve’s, but near the train station. Laurie got Ugg moccasins and I got indecisive over all the beads (good gawd that place overwhelms me). Alex. We had a delicious dinner at her place and watched “The Devil Wears Prada” (cute movie btw, another feel good flick, though this one with backstabbing, bitches and some sex…but only a little). Oooh, we also had lunch somewhere downtown (I forget) and our waitress was my classmate…from 6th grade. Crazy. Okay so. The Owens family, who now have 3 boys under 5 years old, a teenager and another baby on the way. Oh, and they got a cat (who is terrified of all the grabby little monkeys). My mom and I got some yummy Jordanian food and lots of little boy germs. Kids are so cute.

Okay, I think that was basically winter break. Oooh, I did not succeed in eating at El Pollo Loco…probably because I couldn’t find one. I also had a hard time finding my mom an answering machine. Psh, who would’ve thought it’d be so hard. Now, to work on End of Semster report, research applications, or ponder how else I need to prepare for graduation/senior year. I can’t decide…they all sound so gosh darn fun!

[Article] Little Asia on the Hill

By TIMOTHY EGAN

He believes that Latinos are underrepresented because many come from poor agrarian families with little access to the good schools that could prepare them for the rigors of Berkeley. He points out that, on the other hand, many of the Korean students on campus are sons and daughters of parents with college degrees. In any event, he says, it is not the university’s job to fix the problems that California’s public schools produce.

Tofu Makin’

Ever wonder how tofu is made? I know I did. And, thanks to the wonders of YouTube and Michael, here it is. I no longer have to wonder!
