PROFILE

Mark Fathi Massoud is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University, in the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. A member of the California Bar, he received his J.D. and Ph.D. in Jurisprudence and Social Policy from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law.

At Stanford, Massoud is writing a book manuscript, Rights, Law, and Development in Sudan, based on extensive field research. The work builds on the interdisciplinary tradition of law and society to analyze the development of law in volatile states rife with violent conflict.

Massoud has published in academic journals and national newspapers. His most recent paper, "Myth Making and the Collision of Rights in Sudan," was the Law and Society Association's 2008 best graduate student paper. An avid writer, he also received U.C. Berkeley's Eisner Prize in Literature (the university's highest achievement in creative writing) and the Irving Prize in American Wit and Humor.
