Last week, two people from the field of higher education came and talked about their experiences. Their main points of the lecture was to inform us about the lack of Asian Americans in higher education and even to get up encouraged to join that field. There was also the message of doing whatever that you feel is the most enjoyable in life, but for the most part, they were trying to encourage us into the world of higher education.
The first speaker talked about his own struggles to find himself in the world. He told us three important points that have severely affected his life. The first point is that every good deed pays off in the end. I don’t know if I want to agree with his comment. I have done many “good” deeds but I have found that a few actually pays off in the end. I sometimes do activities or get involved in clubs where the purpose is to help others, but in the end, I found out that they are nothing but a group of lowly people trying to cheat off others. The second and third points that he brought up were that you must be at the right place at the right time and is it who you know or what you know. I feel that these two points are true in my experience. The person that I am now was greatly affected by the people I happened to meet along the way and through the activities that I have chosen to do. Also, I was able to get many jobs through networking or a word of mouth.
The next speaker was our beloved Jere Takahashi. He was supposed to talk about his experiences with higher education, but he ended up telling us many stories. What I liked about his lecture was that he entertained us with his many mini stories. He did also get the message across that higher education can be fun.
