Role Models:  Kinh Mae Aung

April 12, 1999

This week, Kinh Mae Aung from the Asian Law Caucus came to lecture and she talked about her career and all the topics that face her in her workplace.  I vaguely remember that she came in last semester also, but what surprised me the most was that her appearance was completely different.  However, her message was mostly the same as the last time.  Her speech was very educational on the issues that are facing the Asian Americans today such as affirmative action and hate violence.

What I really enjoyed about her lecture was not about the cases that she was involved in, but about her own life experience.  It seemed like a majority of the people in the audience would agree since most of the questions asked were about how she got to the position to where she was.  However, I felt that it was inappropriate to ask her about her salary because it didn’t pertain to the issues about her job.  I felt that it was better to hear about her experience about her days at law school and how she changed from a big law firm to the current Asian Law Caucus.  Some people in the audience were more interested in the salary factor and I felt that it served as a great disrespect to our speaker.  I felt like this mainly because it makes APATH seem like a bunch of people not interested in the issues at hand, but rather in making big money in the future.

I feel that we have come a long way as Asians to be able to have somebody who will be willing to fight for Asian rights.  Up until recently, the whole issue of racial discrimination and violence was between the blacks and the whites.  Now, because of organizations such as the Asian Law Caucus, I can feel safe that there is somebody out there willing to fight for Asian justice in America.
