marbles
Marcos Ramírez

i pick up a stick
then kick some rocks
with my nine year old feet
n find five marbles just sittin there
on the dirt road
small little treasures de guatemala
i got two coca-colas
two pan dulces
n some chiclets for the walk back

i head towards el campo
where all the war orphans live
to play fútbol
with my new best friend mario
the cute one with the pretty eyes
who tells me to give it my all
when i butt the ball with my head

as i reach el campo
i see his back first
mario's body
danglin'
on a wooden cross
n i mumble to myself
between my trembles
los soldados
los soldados

as i walk towards la policia
i see mario's head near the goal post
no shock just numbness inside of me
his face starin up at me
dirty n bloody
flies n ants crawling in n out of his eye sockets
they hacked it off with a machete
then kicked it to try to make a goal
i know it
i know it

la policia find a bunch of eyeballs
inside a circle in the dirt
los soldados play marbles with them
when they get bored
they're just kids themselves
la policia say to one another

i don't know what to do
but my gut tells me to pray
n as i kneel before mario's head
i reach out to it
my hands shakin
like mi abuelita's wrinkled hands
as she knits
place two of the marbles
i found on the road
into mario's eye sockets

the shiny green ones
pretty
just like mario's
