Page 11: Cape Tribulation

Cairns is three hours north of Sydney by airplane and is the city right next to the Great Barrier Reef. We spent one day at Cape Tribulation (picture below) which is the oldest rainforest in the world. They often refer to it as "where the rainforest meets the reef" because it is right next to the water.

This is the interesting result of rainforest-type trees growing on the beach

Here Melissa is licking the back of some weird kind of ant as we all watch. We all did it after Melissa tested it out for us. When you lick the back of this type of ant, it gives a strong citrus taste.

This was a little safari trip we took down the Daintree River to look for crocodiles. The guy with the microphone in the background reminded me a bit of the crocodile hunter guy from the Discovery Channel. At one point during the trip, he pulled the boat up next to a tree and grabbed a snake out of the tree with his bare hands to show us.

Here a crocodile hides under some vegetation...

At a nearby petting zoo, I finally saw a kangaroo with a joey (baby kangaroo) in his pouch...
