- Feb. 11-12, Wroclaw (pronounce Vrots-vaf, with rolled rrrrr)
(Breslau auf Deutsch). A shitty city in most respects, but a nice
hostel, Strangers. After being robbed on the
train there, we drownded our depression in an expensive meal. In the
end we got it for free after I (unintentionally!!) found a small stone
in my food. Universal justice prevails.
- Feb. 13, day trip from Wroclaw to Przemkow (pronounced
Pshemkof). This is a whole other story. This town is the birthplace of
my great-great-grandfather in 1861. It is now a bit of a dump. No
English speakers. Luckily a restaurant, which we used liberally, since
we were there for 8 hours, due to the limited bus schedule. We also
hung out at the post office, bought various old vegetables, and
generally tried to make the time pass. The town has one street, and we
probably walked up and down it 20 times.
- Feb. 14-15, Dresden. Another great hostel, Lolli's homestay. Saw the sights, met nice
people, visited two nice museums.
- Feb. 16, Prague. I took a tour to see as much of the city as I
could. Bought hats in the evening. Awful hostel.

Saw a movie, Capote, since it was raining so hard. Flew back to Cologne
in the evening.
- Feb. 7, longest run thus far, close to a half-marathon through
the city parks and forests, in the dark, mud, and rain. Almost counts
as a trip of its own.
- Feb. 5, Brezelwanderung with Trekcologne. A hiking group with

Beach (and hammered some pitons in and out of a rock), collected
huckleberries, and went to the Great Day in Elk.
- August 16-17, Yosemite -- Scott and Owain. Hiked up Unicorn peak
the first day. The second day climbed Hobbit Book, 3 pitches, 5.7, on
Marioulumne Dome
- August 8-August 15, Ann Arbor
- July 29-August 5, Yosemite -- Scott and Owain
- 30th - aid practice at Churchbowl
- 31st - an attempt on Lost Arrow Spire, spoilt by a storm. We
hiked up the Yosemite falls trail. I was psyched to do the Tyrolean
traverse, which we'd practiced the day before at Churchbowl, but this
time with more than 1000 feet of air below me. We rapped down
into
the notch without trouble and Owain started up the first pitch. I was
partway up the 2nd pitch when it started to rain. A flash of lightning
in the distance told us to get off the rock immediately. We had a long
jug back up the notch, and none of us were pro juggers quite yet. I
went
first. It was more exhausting than I had imagined, especially bouncing
up and down on the thin dynamic rope. Scott came up after me. It felt
like a long time waiting for him, and I was worried. The rain was
coming down in sheets. Owain took even longer and we lost radio contact
with him because of stupid people in the valley talking on radios
between their mini vans. The visibility went to almost zero at times as
the clouds shifted around us. Owain made it to the top eventually and
we hiked down in a hurry. I have to go back sometime on a sunnier day,
because I'm still psyched to do the traverse.
- 1st - some climbs at Swan Slab. Owain lead a pitch of 5.6, and
I lead two pitches of 5.5 above it, sketching myself out a bit on a
slabby bit when a finger crack ran out.
- 2nd - escaped to the desert and whiled away the hours in hot
springs.
- 3rd - Great White Book, 5.7, Stately Pleasure Dome (in about 2
hours car to car). Scott lead the whole thing placing maybe three
points
of pro in 4 pitches. Fun climb, easy friction, plus the book for
balance.
- 4th - got up the first four pitches of the Salathe Wall
- May 25-July 15, 2003, travelling in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos
with Scott -- here is a trip report in the form of emails we
sent while traveling
- May 9-11, Mendocino for Mother's Day
- May 2-3, Henry Coe State Park -- Antonio Piccolboni. Camped first
night by Rodeo Pond, second day took a day hike to Pacheco Falls. Hiked
out a day early due to very wet feet.
- April 20, Pinnacles -- Richard, Yossi, Rahel, Nissan. Spent much
too long looking for elephant rock. It wasn't even that great. Lots of
dirty climbing. Everyone gave on up finding good climbing on the west
side of Pinnalces. But Richard and I went ot chockstone dome. Climbed
some very easy 5.6 and 5.8 and then I lead a 5.4. Much cleaner and much
preferable to Elephant rock.
- April 6, I saw this really cool chalking on Evans
that some anonymous people had done. It looked awesome!
- March 19-30, Phoenix and the Grand Canyon -- For spring break
Scott and I went to the Grand Canyon (via Phoenix) for a six day
walking
trip. A link to the trip report.
- March 15, march in San Francisco with Tuffles and Scott
- March 7-9, Yosemite -- Carl and I went to Yosemite for a couple
of days. Day 1: we climbed After Six on Manure Pile Buttress (5.6, six
pitches), mostly lead by Carl, but a bit by me. The first pitch is
crazy
hard, not 5.6, but Carl did a great job. Great climb, and spectacular
view on top of North Dome, Clouds' Rest, and Half Dome. Then we climbed
Mungenella (5.6, 3 pitches?) at Lower Yosemite Falls. There are funny
trees all the way up. Also a spectacular climb, but we descended a bit
in the dark, and with only one headlamp. Day 2: We took this day a bit
easier, and climbed some one-pitch things. Church's chimney (5.6). My
abs hurt like hell afterwards. Then I lead 2 pitches of Aunt Fanny's
Closet (5.4, 3 pitches), but had to leave gear at the top to get down.
Then Carl lead a bit of Uncle Fanny's Closet (5.7) but we had to
descend, and couldn't remove a cam. :-( It's got a really small nasty
chimney, and I got stuck.
- February 20-23, Red Rocks, Nevada -- Yossi, Rahel, Scott and I
went to Red Rocks for 3 days. We spent the first day climbing at 2nd
pullout, on Magic Bus and Black Corridor. Day 2: Scott and I went up
Frogland, 5.8, 8 pitches (I lead the 2nd pitch!) It was a long day
because we were stuck behind very slow parties and had a very long
descent due to bad navigation. Day 3: We climbed Great Red Book at 2nd
pullout, Little Black Book, and spent the day being a bit lazy. The
whole trip was bracketed by a 10 hour drive on either side in a small
cramped space. But the climbing was awesome. Epinephrine (5.8, 19
pitches) is next on my list.
- February 17, Pinnacles -- Richard, Daniel Krasner, Woodsy, and
Carl.
- February 16, march in San Francisco with Kate, Carla, and
Charlotte
- January 25, Pinnacles with Krasner and Scott, cool 5.10 roof and
some fun 5.6's with lots of stars

- December 1, Mt. Tamalpais with Fabrice and co., day hike
- November 24-29, J-Tree for Thanksgiving -- Scott, Kelly, Mike,
Mark, Sarah, Dave, Carl, Carl's friend Abram, Magdalen, Woodsy,
Tuffles,
Greg, Vanessa, Karl, Yossi, Rahel, Amy, Richard, Alan, and a few
others.
Climbed at lots of places, got a bee sting, and had to go to the
emergency room and get vicodin. Also went to hot springs.
- November 3, ski club went pumpkineering
(but it wasn't me)
- November 2, Fall Arts Fest -- a really awesome party put on by
the Student Committee at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film
Archive.
- October 26-27, Gourmet Trip at Pt. Reyes. -- Scott, Amy, Richard,
Woodsy, Amber, Steve Jones, Jen, Brian, Anne
- October 18-20, Yosemite -- Pam, Scott and I hiked up to Echo
Peaks. I got a view of Matthes Crest which is on my to-do list, as well
at Cathedral peak.
- October 12?, Castle Rock -- Richard and Carl. Climbed stuff too
hard for me and got frustrated.
- September 27-29, Mendocino with Scott
- September 13-15, Lizzy's Last Peak (Four Gables) in Humphrey's
Basin.
- September 7, cycling in San Francsico and Sausalito with Scott
- August 31-September 2, Courtright Reservoir -- Kelly, Carl,
Scott, Mark, Woodsy, Amy, Richard, Heather, Tuffles... Lead my first
sport route, Drill Seargant 5.4 (Tuffles did it no handed). Did some
cool 5.8+ friction with Carl and Scott.
- August 24, Windsor -- Lisa, Clement, Carrie, Anita...
- August 14-24, Michigan
- August 9-11, Tuolumne Meadows -- Scott, Woodsy, Yossi, Rahel and
sister, Martin, Kelly. Day 1: climbed Tenaya peak (5.6, 12 pitches)
with
Woodsy and Scott. Lead my first pitch somewhere half way up. We simul
climbed most of the way. Though we got off around 4:00 we decided to
head over to Hermaphrodite Flake (5.8, 3 pitches) on Stately Pleasure
Dome. Needless to say, it was a bit of an epic. Due to impending
darkness, stuck gear, 3 climbers, problems descending, etc., we didn't
