Minutes from March 11, 2008 meeting coming soon!
NSCS General Meeting: February 12, 2008
24 Wheeler at 7pm
Icebreaker and Pizza
Members were able to interact and meet each other with the icebreaker task: try to find someone who has read the same book (not textbook) as you within the past three years. After everyone has been able to get to know the people around them, we will attempt to link everyone in the classroom by books we have read. Ex: Y-Nhy and I have read The Way of the Peaceful Warrior, Y-Nhy and Ashley have read To Kill A Mockingbird, Ashley and Susan have read Harry Potter, etc.
Members were also able to eat pizza and have refreshments during the activity.
Induction
Sepideh explained to the members that Induction will be happening next Tuesday in the Lipman Room at the top (8th) floor of Barrows Hall. It is a way for the chapter to formally induct and welcome the members to the benefits and activities of NSCS. The dress will be business casual, and refreshments will be provided. There will also be guest speakers that will also welcome and congratulate the new members.
Planning for College Success
Emily explained that due to the time constraints and resources the chapter has this semester, PFCS will be taking a modified approach to helping students in elementary school plan for college success. Whereas PFCS was initially aimed at tutoring students (namely seventh graders) in the local area, since there are numerous amounts of tutoring programs already established with the schools in the area, PFCS will instead be offering different resources. We will be keeping monthly calendars and programs of the events happening with the various student tutoring groups on campus, and a general database will be kept in order to allow our NSCS members to participate in many different outreach programs. This way, there will be many resources to inform members what events are going on around campus and initiate carpooling, group action, etc.
Members who are interested in participating with this program or have any questions are strongly encouraged to notify Emily at m_cramer@berkeley.edu .
Relay for Life
Ashley presented that Relay for Life is a life changing event that brings together more than 3.5 million people to: celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost to the disease, and fight back against a disease that takes too much. (www.relayforlife.org)
Dawn will be in charge of the event, including gathering a team together in order to camp out and always have at least one person on the track during the relay. NSCS will pay for the registration, and shirts will be provided for the event.
Signups will be done online, please email Dawn at dawn_yu@berkeley.edu if you are interested or have any questions.
The event will take place in Edwards Stadium on May 3rd starting at 10 AM and will end May 4th at 10 AM.
Officer Elections
Cynthia presented officer opportunities for next year. Even though it seems early, there will be three officers graduating this semester, and we would love to open up leadership opportunities to members who are organized, dedicated, and motivated. We are presenting this early in order for members to get to know the officer positions now, including the duties involved, the events we plan, and the other exciting benefits of NSCS. Members can shadow the officers and are encouraged to participate in upcoming events in order to get to know the group and responsibilities necessary.
Cynthia and Emily will be returning next year, and we feel we can make it a really great year, especially with PFCS just beginning to really get underway now. This is a great opportunity for members to become more involved with the organization and be able to get to know all the benefits that it will offer in the future.
Please email Cynthia ccfuentes@berkeley.edu or Ashley berkeley.nscs@gmail.com for more information or any questions! We will mention this at the Induction Ceremony next week as well.
Exemplary Scholar Finalist
Our very own Madvhi Venkatesh, a sophomore here at Berkeley, has been named one of the top five finalists for the NSCS Exemplary Scholar Award! Our congratulations go out to her and her outstanding achievements, and we encourage our members to support her by voting when her youtube video comes out in the next few weeks. Congrats again!
National Leadership Council
Sepideh is currently on the National Leadership Council for NSCS, and since she is graduating, she encourages members to apply for a spot on this fourteen-member council in conjunction with the National Office. For more information regarding her position and/or any other questions, please email her at sepideh110@berkeley.edu.
