I have been waiting to mess around with one so she has basically lent it to me to play with during the day (yes she works and I just well do nothing except ride my bike 50 miles a day.... its getting quite boring.... the life of the unemployeed) anyway so the first thing I did was install safari.. which worked just perfectly. then X11 which worked just perfectly. the next thing was to see to do a little user admin stuff- add me as a user,, still easy stuff then was getting the web server working- simple again- although it was a little weird that when I created the public_html folders it wasn't working properly... so I was forced to read some docs and found out about that apple called it "sites" ok so I was fine with that and got html to be displayed then I decided to check out emacs since I heard it was installed. so in the terminal i typed emacs test.txt & and go figure... it didn't work got some suspended (tty output) error of course I did find emacs in the application folder and it runs just fine- I just can't open it from the terminal.. well no that isn't quite right as it will open in terminal mode just not as a new window anyway so then I moved on and got some file http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2001/12/14/apache_two.html on how to get cgi, php and mysql running. It recommends that I open some httpd.conf file. Of course it indicates that I should be using bbedit (which requires me to shell out money--- no thanks!), and since I can't get emacs to work I decide to use the finder.. and well I CAN'T FIND THE FILE!!!!! As clear as day the file sitting in etc/httpd but when I open the HD there is NO ETC FOLDER?????? so I figure that just some display option has been selected wrong well I can't seem to find anything. Given all that I hear about apple development I can't believe that within the first 3-4 things I try I find what I consider to be some serious problems. I am sure these issues can all be solved by some guy who knows something about this stuff but WHY???? I should be able to open the damn HD folder and see whats there. Additionaly I figure I should use the SEARCH function to see if the new version of OSX pu the file in a different place. so I search for httpd -- go figure I get ZERO!!!! so basically something is fucked up. then with the emacs thing... I just don't get it- don't testers actually use these things and make suggestions which could improve usability- ya teh value added is small since due to how many "darrin's" are there out there asking for this stuff.. but in the terminal I should be able to type an application name and have the application OPEN! there is nothing revolutionary about that is there? I should be able to search for a file and have the computer find it! again nothing novel in that requestion either- guess I will just stay bitter and unemployeed
