PAHC Representative

Name: Cherryl Matias
Year: Class of 2011
Major: Molecular & Cell Biology
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Pre-Professional Track: Pre-Med

Why did you decide to join PAHC?
I joined because I immediately saw PAHC as a great resource that would help get me on track with my major as well as prepare me for potentially applying to medical school. Sounds like the nerdy thing to do, huh? Trust. It is! But the work that PAHC accomplishes to serve and educate the community, plus the incredible people you meet who eventually become your best friends and family truly make joining PAHC one of the best experiences in your four years at Cal. Its comforting to have a large bunch of people with similar goals and interests who are there for you, both academically and emotionally.

As a core member, what skills or knowledge can you contribute to PAHC’s Internship Program ?
As PAHC Rep, I plan on maintaining and strengthening the ties we have with the rest of the filipino community, especially with the pre-professional organizations (P4 and PASAE), and to get to know other pre-health orgs to hopefully initiate event collaborations. I plan on utilizing networking and communication skills to branch out and form contacts outside of Cal to other universities such as UC Davis, San Jose State, San Francisco State University, etc. To execute this, this entails supporting other clubs’ events and attending their meetings, having the confidence to approach and talk to people you may not know, and keeping in close contact with them, all of which I can guide you through if you’re not particularly comfortable meeting new people. I am currently in the process of brainstorming for a new PAHC project for the Fall semester as well.

In the Spring semester, along with Secretary, we will be helping coordinate the Minorities in Health Conference, a collaborative effort among PAHC, CHE, and BSHA to instigate an increase in minority health care workers since their numbers fail to represent the staggering number of minorities in this country. Here, you will be exposed to how to plan a major event which includes finding contacts and guest speakers, networking, creating beneficial workshops, outreaching to high schoolers to attend the event, etc.

And just in general, I’m an awesome listener so if you ever need anyone to talk to or get advice for any situation, I’m always here. I think I have some good references. I was voted “Most Trustworthy” in last year’s PAHC Standouts as proof! haha jk

What do you like to do on your free time?
I’m a huge movie watcher and I definitely have my tv shows lined up for me to watch online each week. I’m really not too nit picky. I really just enjoy hanging out with friends just chilling, doing “nothing,” but I’m also a big fan of spontaneous outtings or getting out of Berkeley every once and again, whether with friends, or by myself for my occassional alone-time. Eating, napping, working out (yaa… i need to work on this one more haha. anyone want to join?) and trying to figure out how to play the guitar are also on the list.
