Apolis Postseason Games with Four Late Lead Changes
On July 28, 2019, the Oakland Athletics defeated the Texas Rangers 6-5 in an exciting game that featured four lead changes in the last four innings.
The last lead change occurred when A's left fielder Khris Davis ended the game with a walk-off walk.
Less than one month later, the Chicago Cubs defeated the San Francisco Giants 12-11 on August 22 in an another game that featured four lead
changes in the last four innings. The last lead change occurred when Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant hit a go-ahead two-run home run in
the bottom of the 8th inning. Cubs slugger Anthony Rizzo called the win a "season-defining win". Baseball is a crazy game: Rizzo drove in
the only run in a 1-0 game the next day between the same two teams.
The two teams combined for twenty-seven hits and seven home runs in the 12-11 game and combined for six hits and zero home runs in the 1-0 game!
Has there ever been a postseason MLB game with four late lead changes? After some reflecting and some Googling, I couldn't recall
or find any MLB postseason games with four late lead changes. However, I can remember an NFL playoff game and a NBA playoff game with four
late lead changes. For both games, the last lead change occurred with no time remaining!
In 2018, the Minnesota Vikings defeated the New Orleans Saints in a
playoff game that featured four lead changes in the last 181 seconds.
The last lead change occurred when Vikings
wide receiver Stefan Diggs caught a 61-yard touchdown pass with no time remaining (see picture above).
In 1995, the Orlando Magic defeated the Indiana Pacers in a playoff game that featured four lead changes
in the last 14 seconds. The last lead change occurred when Pacers
center Rik Smits hit a jumper with no time remaining.
The Vikings won in Minneapolis and the Pacers won in Indianapolis. Have there been any other
NFL playoff games with four lead changes in the last 181 seconds or NBA playoff games with four lead changes in the last 14 seconds?
