Cal Second Basemen
In 2021, Cal alum and former Oakland A's player Marcus Semien hit forty-five home runs for the
Toronto Blue Jays. With that large home run total,
Semien set the all-time
record for most home runs in a season by a Cal alum. The previous record was held by second baseman Jeff Kent, who hit thirty-seven home runs
for the San Francisco Giants in 2002. (Kent was one of two Cal second basemen who were a memorable part of the '02 Giants. The other
was this little guy.) Semien, who played shortstop with the A's and with Cal, played second
base for the Blue Jays. Semien's forty-five home runs were the most
all-time in a season for a second baseman. It's interesting that the two highest Cal alum home run totals have
come from the
third "weakest-hitting" fielding position (second baseman).
