NDSU First-Round NFL Quarterbacks
The San Francisco 49ers drafted North Dakota State (NDSU) quarterback Trey Lance with the third overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Lance is the second first-round draft pick that
the 49ers have used on a Division 1-AA/FCS player in their entire history. The other 49ers Division 1-AA/FCS first-rounder (the #16 pick
of the '85 draft) was pretty decent. Interestingly,
Lance won the Jerry Rice Award as a freshman.
Lance is the second NDSU quarterback taken with a top-three pick in the past six years. Carson Wentz was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles with the
second overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft. NDSU is one of only two universities to have multiple
quarterbacks drafted with top-three picks in the last ten years. (Oklahoma is the
other: former A's first-round draft pick Tyler Murray was
selected with the #1 pick of the 2019 NFL Draft and Baker Mayfield was selected with the #1 pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.) Fargo, where NDSU is located, is now
known by me for something other than the movie!
