Leading MLB in Total Bases and Stolen Bases
In 2023,
Ronald Acuña Jr. won the NL MVP award unanimously as he lead MLB in
runs (149),
hits (217),
on-base pct. (.416),
stolen bases (73), and
total bases (383). The last two categories are
particular noteworthy as Acuña Jr. became the first player since 1917 to lead MLB in stolen bases and total bases. That year, Ty Cobb lead MLB with 55 stolen bases and 335 total bases. In the last 70 years, I could find
only three MLB stolen bases leaders who were in the top ten in total bases. All three were Willie Mays. In 1957 and in
1958, Mays led MLB in stolen bases and was second in total bases. In
1956, he was fifth in total bases.
