Great Bay Area Sports Moments in 1982: The Catch and The Play
"The Catch" and
"The Play" are the
two greatest moments in Bay Area sports
history. I think it's incredible that the play that several NFL observers consider to be the
second greatest play in NFL history (100 years) and
the play that many college football analysts consider to be
the greatest play
in college football history (150 years) occurred in the same calendar year (1982) and
less than 20 miles apart. "The Play" is famous in part because of Cal Football announcer Joe Starkey's
radio call. Seven years later, Starkey started calling games for the San Francisco 49ers on the radio.
Starkey did not call "The Catch", but he did call "The Catch II".
