An Interview with Dr. John Gelinas

Dr. John Gelinas is the owner of Chimes Pharmacy located at College and Alcatraz. He graduated from the University of the Pacific in 1976 and has been a pharmacist for 30 years.

What made you decide to go into pharmacy? I worked in a drug store [Chimes Pharmacy] back in high school. I thought it would be a good idea to go into pharmacy since I liked working there.

What made you decide to open up an independent pharmacy?

The previous owner in the store i worked in back in high school decided to retire, and he asked me if I were interested in taking over. I thought it was a good idea. So I took over Chimes Pharmacy.

What do you like about having your own pharmacy?

Being my own boss. The hours are longer but I don't have to answer to another person. You get to make your own decisions.

What do you dislike about it?

Not enough time off.

What are some things you wish you could improve on in the independent pharmacy business? Most importantly, I wish we would get fairly reimbursed for our services. Insurance pay little for prescription services. Very small payment compared to what we do.

What are your favorite hobbies/activities?

Golfing and traveling.

Where is your dream vacation destination?

Italy!

Any advice for future aspiring pre-pharmacy students?

Do something you enjoy doing. Don't do it because your parents told you to. Choose it because you want to do it, or else you'd end up hating your job.
