Attendance: 300
Supported By: The A-Frames, Alta May

Encore: Suck You Dry, Into the Drink, Urban Guerilla
Notes: The Trench You're Digging and Pushing for War are premiered. During Sweet Young Thing, someone throws a coat onto Mark's pedals, dislodging something and silencing his guitar for a bit. Steve draws out the ending of that song, and then leads the guys in a short, 50's-ish rock 'n' roll jam. When they finish up, Mark exclaims, "Now that's rock 'n' roll!" The ending to Take it Like a Man is also drawn out. When they come out for the encore and finish tuning up, Mark tells the crowd that they need to be perfectly in tune so that they can pull off something like this, and plays a fuzzed out chord. Steve adds, "Y'all deserve it."

Encore: Suck You Dry, You Got it
Notes: In Search of is premiered. This show was a benefit for Second Avenue Pizza, to aid with their legal bills stemming from a recent lawsuit. They finish the intro to Sonic Infusion and Dan taps away on his cymbal, head down, as the other guys turn around and look at him before he eventually kicks into the song proper. Steve lengthens out the breakdown in I Have to Laugh, prompting Mark to introduce him with, "Ladies and gentlemen, Roger Jim Turner!" In Search of meanders to an end, leaving the crowd wondering whether the song is over. When it definitely is, Steve tells them that the ending will by "wavy on the recorded version." As they finish the main set and are leaving the stage, Steve announces, "Three words: eat more pizza." You Got it is prefaced with Steve and Mark intentionally poorly jamming on the intro. They finish the show with Mark saying, "We've got to go to bed...rock'n'roll-pizza-orgy kind of bed, not get-up-early-because-we've-got-to-go-to-work kind of bed."

Encore: In 'N' Out of Grace (w/Van Connor)
Notes: During the intro to You Got it, someone hits Steve and his new guitar with a beer. Steve stops playing and spits at the offender, adding "Fuck you!" While Dan keeps the beat on a cymbal, Steve takes his time cleaning off himself and his guitar and retuning. Someone else on Steve's side tries to throw a beer, and Mark runs over and angrily stops him. When Steve is ready, they pick up right where they left off. Guy's bass amp cuts out during the middle of I Have to Laugh. He stops the song and starts checking out his equipment, only to find out that the circuit breaker that it's on has blown and that the matter is being attended to. During the break, Dan tries to get Steve to do some of his solo material, and Steve fools around with a little bit of Greenback Dollars on the guitar, but doesn't step up and do it. Once they're back in action, Dan suggests dropping the rest of I Have to Laugh, and they move onto the next song. During Touch Me I'm Sick, amateur stage diving hour starts up. Steve keeps going when the song is finished and when he stops, Mark tells the crowd that they were supposed to drop the crowd surfer when the song finished. During Urban Guerrilla one of the amateur stage divers knocks over Mark's mic stand right into his right hand, hurting it badly. They take a very long break before the encore, and when they come back out, some guy who's been shouting for Broken Hands all night starts up again. Mark comments, "That's ironic." On In 'N' Out of Grace, Steve keeps playing during Dan's drum solo and Van Connor (Valis/Screaming Trees) comes on stage and sings along with Mark on the last verse, using Guy's mic. They leave with Mark saying, "Alright, thanks everyone, except the asshole who fucked up my hand."

Notes: At some point during the main set, Mark observes that this month marks 20 years of Steve and him creating music together. He then points out that Dan has a cold, and that Dan was very concerned that people would think that his runny nose is due to snorting cocaine. He goes on to say that Dan says that cocaine is popular with the kids today, adding, "Kids are dumb," and finishes it up by saying that Dan prefers to inject his cocaine, rather than snort it. During the break in In 'N' Out of Grace, Steve sits down cross-legged and watches Dan and remains that way for most of the rest of the song. They go into an extended ending to the song, and eventually Dan, having played his fill, exits the stage. The other three continue on for another minute or two, with Mark detuning his guitar.

11/29/03 The Sunset Tavern. Seattle, WA (90 min)
Attendance: 250
Supported By: The Cripples, The Familiars

Encore: (Pushing For War), In 'N' Out of Grace, Here Comes Sickness, Suck You Dry, Hate the Police
Encore 2: Into the Drink, Beneath the Valley... (w/Matt)
Notes: This show was a party for their first soundman and tour manager, Erik Mans, who is visiting from Europe, and they appear billed as Beneath the Valley of the Underdog (like they did in 1997). It's very long and very fun. Bushpusher Man is premiered, and Mudride, Get into Yours, Flat out Fucked and Hate the Police return after lengthy absences. Aside from Erik, many Mudhoney-related people are in attendance, including Matt, Bob Whittaker (former manager), Danny Baird (tour manager), Jack Endino, David Katznelson (Reprise A&R) and Ed Fotheringham. Kim Thayil is also present. After Who You Drivin' Now?, Steve complains about being unable to see and pulls his hair back. Mark starts giving him a hard time about being a long-haired hippie, and says that the reason that Steve can't see is because of all the hash brownies he ate. During Get into Yours, they lose their place after the solo and end up stopping rather than going into a chorus. Mark explains that they don't usually play requests, but that Bushpusher Man is being played live for the first time at the request of David Katznelson, who always liked it. Steve adds, "It sucks." Steve starts up You Got it earlier than he should, and Mark runs over and covers his strings to stop him. Steve shrugs it off by saying that he hates the next song (Touch Me I'm Sick) and then adds, "I hate the next one, too" (You Got it). Having previously broken a string, he breaks a string on his backup guitar during Pushing For War, and being out of fully-strung guitars, he's unable to continue for the last song of the main set, In 'N' Out of Grace. After a brief conference, Mark announces that they'll be taking their break a bit early and will come back shortly. They come back on and Mark comments that they've lost momentum. After Dan leads them through the final notes of Pushing For War, he says that they've got it back and they slam into the postponed In 'N' Out of Grace. Mark takes the break to compliment the other guys on how fabulous they are and how great Steve's beard smells. Dan takes a significantly longer than normal drum solo, perplexing Ed Fotheringham, who wants to do a stage dive at the moment that they go back into the song proper. During the outtro of long, long Beneath the Valley..., Matt comes on stage with the guys for the first time since he left the band. He alternates between taking off his clothes and shouting into the mic. Dan seems particularly interested in him having his pants around his ankles, as every time he begins to pull them up, Dan motions for him to leave them down.

Encore: Here Comes Sickness, Suck You Dry, In 'N' Out of Grace, Hate the Police
Notes: At some point, a drunk guy who's been shouting for Touch Me I'm Sick and letting everyone know that he's from Tacoma all night jumps on stage, shakes Mark and yells in his ear (to Mark's displeasure) and then makes a fitting stage dive where the crowd seperates, allowing him to crash on the ground and break his glasses.. During Sonic Infusion someone throws a beer at Mark, prompting him to angrily ask, "Who the fuck did that?" Steve then threatens to play 45 minutes of folk music and does a bit of Bad Marauder. As the evening ends, Mark invites everyone to Steve's show the next night and thanks all "except the asshole who threw the beer, and especially thanks to us."
