Tourbook

1/18/19 Pappy & Harriet's. Pioneertown, CA (60 min)
Attendance: 350
Supporting: The Flesh Eaters
Set: Into the Drink, I Like it Small, Hey Neanderfuck, You Got it, Nerve Attack, The Farther I Go, Judgment Rage..., Kill Yourself Live, Touch Me I'm Sick, If I Think, Suck You Dry, Prosperity Gospel, Get into Yours, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, The Only Son of the Widow from Nain, 21st Century Pharisees
Notes: It's a fun set in a small club that's WAAAAAY out in the middle of nowhere. They've changed the arrangement of 'Hey Neanderfuck' slightly. Instead of Steve playing an outtro, now they all stop together. 'Kill Yourself Live' is going well, but then Mark loses his place in the vocals for the last verse, and it's total chaos. Do you play the verse until Mark gets back on track? Do you play the verse for the normal length, and then go into the chorus? No one knows. They laugh about it afterward, and move on.

1/19/19 The Echoplex. Los Angeles, CA (60 min)
Attendance: 500
Supporting: The Flesh Eaters
Set: Into the Drink, I Like it Small, Hey Neanderfuck, You Got it, Nerve Attack, The Farther I Go, Judgment Rage..., Kill Yourself Live, Touch Me I'm Sick, If I Think, Suck You Dry, Prosperity Gospel, Get into Yours, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, The Only Son of the Widow from Nain, 21st Century Pharisees
Notes: This is - what's the opposite of a small club that's WAAAAAY out in the middle of nowhere? It's the same set as last night, and they're just as stoked to be playing with the Flesh Eaters as last night, particularly in the Flesh Eaters' hometown of L.A. The previous night, Dan tried to start off 'The Farther I Go,' when it's Steve's intro. So, tonight, Steve goes over to Dan before the song, says, "I'll start it tongiht," and they share a laugh.

3/9/19 The Glass House. Pomona, CA
Supporting: The Adolescents
Supported By: Claw Hammer

Notes: They had some technical problems and the show had an early curfew, so they called some audibles on the set. The stage right power (covering Mark and Guy's equipment) was out when they hit the stage, and that took a long time to get sorted out. To account for the lost time, they cut out 'Kill Yourself Live' (before 'Touch Me I'm Sick') and 'Prosperity Gospel' (before 'Suck You Dry'). Then, toward the end of the set, they find out that they've got some time to work with, so they add 'One Bad Actor' (after 'Paranoid Core') and close with 'Hate the Police.'

3/22/19 White Oak Music Hall (Upstairs). Houston, TX

Notes: Dan says this show was super fun.

5/4/19 KEXP Gathering Space. Seattle, WA (60 min)
Attendance: 300
Supported By: Control Test, Dark Smith
Set: (Heard it from a Friend), Nerve Attack, I Like it Small, (Get into Yours), You Got it, Get into Yours, The Farther I Go, Judgment Rage..., Kill Yourself Live, Touch Me I'm Sick, If I Think, Prosperity Gospel, Suck You Dry, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, One Bad Actor, 21st Century Pharisees
Notes: This show is a celebration of the 15th anniversary of KEXP radio's punk program, Sonic Reducer. The show is brodcast live on KEXP. Mudhoney is introduced by Sonic Reducer host Brian Foss who says, "We tried to get REO Speedwagon to play and they couldn't do it. So we thought, let's get Seattle's best influenced-by-REO-Speedwagon band, Mudhoney." Mudhoney then hits the stage and Mark sings the first two lines from REO Speedwagon's 'Heard it from a Friend.' Steve tries to start up 'Get into Yours' before its time, and finally Dan yells to look at the setlist. Well, that's a completely different type of distortion for that song, so Steve has to fiddle with his many distortion pedals for a bit before they can continue. Since the set is being broadcast on the radio, there's no cursing, and Mark has noted the three songs on the setlist where he was to drop some words ('Prosperity Gospel,' 'Next Mass Extinction,' and '21st Century Pharisees').

5/10/19 The Dacres. Walla Walla, WA
Supported By: The Derelicts
Set: Into the Drink, I Like it Small, Hey Neanderfuck, You Got it, Nerve Attack, The Farther I Go, Judgment Rage..., No One Has, Kill Yourself Live, Touch Me I'm Sick, If I Think, Prosperity Gospel, Suck You Dry, Please Mr. Gunman, Get into Yours, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, One Bad Actor, The Only Son of the Widow from Nain, 21st Century Pharisees
Encore: In 'N' Out of Grace, Chardonnay, Hate the Police, Fix Me
Notes: Walla Walla is in the heart of Washington's wine country, hence 'Chardonnay' for the first time in nearly three years (8/27/16).

5/11/19 The Lucky You Lounge. Spokane, WA

5/22/19 "Chef Conf". The Paramount Theater. Seattle, WA (60 min)
Supporting: Deep Sea Diver
Supported By: Recipe for Disaster
Set: Nerve Attack, I Like it Small, You Got it, Get into Yours, The Farther I Go, Judgment Rage..., Kill Yourself Live, Touch Me I'm Sick, If I Think, Prosperity Gospel, Suck You Dry, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, One Bad Actor, 21st Century Pharisees
Notes: This show is part of a conference. The founders of Chef are Mudhoney fans, leading to the band playing this gig. A couple of the guys need to catch early morning flights, leading them to "headline" while playing in the middle of the bill. It's not your usual setup for the Paramount - the seaats are down and it's a flat floor, and then there's a bar and a couple of fancy catered foot stations set up. Then, the whole balcony is closed off. They play a set like they would at any gig (in fact, the same set as 5/4/19 a few weeks before). After 'Paranoid Core,' Mark makes a reference to the 'hoarding food' line in the song, and calls out to an audience member, "Speaking of hoarding food, is that your sixth trip to the buffet? ... I kid, I kid."

5/24/19 Green Bay Distillery. Green Bay, WI
Supported By: Boris the Spider, The Hussy
Set: Into the Drink, I Like it Small, Hey Neanderfuck, You Got it, Nerve Attack, The Farther I Go, Judgment Rage..., No One Has, Kill Yourself Live, Touch Me I'm Sick, If I Think, Prosperity Gospel, Suck You Dry, Please Mr. Gunman, Get into Yours, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, One Bad Actor, The Only Son of the Widow from Nain, 21st Century Pharisees
Encore: Here Comes Sickness, Hate the Police, Fix Me
Notes: They cut the encore shorter than normal because they're up against a curfew.

5/25/19 Fine Line Music Cafe. Minneapolis, MN
Supported By: METZ, The Black-Eyed Snakes
Set: Into the Drink, I Like it Small, Hey Neanderfuck, You Got it, Nerve Attack, The Farther I Go, Judgment Rage..., No One Has, Kill Yourself Live, Touch Me I'm Sick, If I Think, Prosperity Gospel, Suck You Dry, Please Mr. Gunman, Get into Yours, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, One Bad Actor, The Only Son of the Widow from Nain, 21st Century Pharisees
Encore: Who You Drivin' Now?, Here Comes Sickness, You Stupid Asshole, The Money will Roll..., Hate the Police, Fix Me

5/26/19 Lincoln Hall. Chicago, IL
Supported By: METZ
Set: Into the Drink, I Like it Small, Hey Neanderfuck, You Got it, Nerve Attack, The Farther I Go, Judgment Rage..., No One Has, Kill Yourself Live, Touch Me I'm Sick, If I Think, Prosperity Gospel, Suck You Dry, Get into Yours, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, One Bad Actor, The Only Son of the Widow from Nain, 21st Century Pharisees
Encore: Here Comes Sickness, In 'N' Out of Grace, You Stupid Asshole, The Money will Roll..., Hate the Police, Fix Me
Notes: Steve's amp craps out during 'Kill Yourself Live' and it takes a while to swap in a new amp and get him up to speed. As a result, they cut 'Please Mr. Gunman' from the written setlist, which was slotted in after 'Suck You Dry.'

6/14/19 Elks Temple Spanish Ballroom. Tacoma, WA (100 min)
Attendance: 700
Supported By: The Fucking Eagles, The Drove
Set: In 'N' Out of Grace, Into the Drink, I Like it Small, Hey Neanderfuck, You Got it, Nerve Attack, The Farther I Go, Good Enough, Judgment Rage..., Kill Yourself Live, Sweet Young Thing, Touch Me I'm Sick, Mudride, Prosperity Gospel, Suck You Dry, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, Messiah's Lament, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, One Bad Actor, The Only Son of the Widow from Nain, 21st Century Pharisees
Encore: If I Think, Here Comes Sickness, You Stupid Asshole, Hate the Police, Fix Me
Notes: After about forty shows touring on Digital Garbage, they play 'Messiah's Lament' for the first time, the last song on the record they had yet to perform. They thought it'd be a little tricky since Dan wrote the guitar, and it came unnaturally to Steve. But they tried it at practice earlier in the week, and it came together easily. Power goes out on both guitar amps during the first song, 'In N Out of Grace.' They get it sorted out, huddle up on where to restart the song, and Mark brings everyone back in with an a capella, "Christ body and blood I crave." Another small hiccup to start 'I like it Small' where Mark needs to sing from the get go, but is back by his amps when Dan starts counting in: "I was nowhere near a mic." From then on, it's smooth sailing. At one point, Mark makes a joke about the opening band's name: "Hey fucking Tacoma, thanks for fucking coming out to see The fucking Drove, The Fucking Eagles, and fucking us." Steve mentions that he thinks they're just called The F'ing Eagles now, and Mark shrugs - not as good of a joke that way. The sold out Tacoma crowd is lively - livelier than your typical Seattle crowd, at least.

6/15/19 Wonder Ballroom. Portland, OR (90 min)
Attendance: 600
Supported By: Summer Cannibals, Dirty Princess
Encore: You Stupid Asshole, Hate the Police, Fix Me, The Money will Roll...
Notes: After one show since playing 'Messiah's Lament,' they play it again. Mark leads into it with an enthusiastic, "Hit it, Steve!" then quickly realizes that's too much energy for the song, then tones it way down with, "Steve, if you're ready, please hit it." From then on, Mark is introducing just about every song with, "Hit it, Steve!" and varying the energy and tone to match the song that they're about to start. They're coming up against a midnight curfew (The Wonder Ballroom is in a residential area), so they plan on a short encore - the first three songs they play. Then, they finish those and have a few minutes left, so they huddle up and add one back in - "The Money will Roll..." That makes for an atypical show closer, but that's what happens when you start audibling.

9/28/19 "The Ohana Festival". Doheny State Beach. Dana Point, CA (45 min)
Supporting: Eddie Vedder, Incubus, Glen Hansard
Supported By: Donavon Frankenreiter, Benjamin Booker, Laura Jane Grace & the Devouring Mothers, The Messthetics, Madison Ryann Ward, Paul Cauthen, Erin Rae, Johnny Roundhouse
Set: Nerve Attack, I Like it Small, You Got it, The Farther I Go, If I Think, Creeps are Everywhere, Suck You Dry, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, One Bad Actor, 21st Century Pharisees, Touch Me I'm Sick
Notes: Mudhoney plays the second day of this three-day festival. They debut 'Creeps are Everywhere' from the Morning in America EP, which was released the previous week. At one point, Mark is dancing around the stage, then after the song ends, tells the crowd, "These moves are patented. They are trademarked. ...and no one else really wants to do them." Mark doesn't play guitar on 'Touch Me I'm Sick,' just like the 2/7/09 Portland show.

10/6/19 Union Transfer. Philadelphia, PA
Supported By: Pissed Jeans, Body Spray
Set: In 'N' Out of Grace, I Like it Small, Hey Neanderfuck, You Got it, Nerve Attack, Prosperity Gospel, The Farther I Go, Good Enough, Judgment Rage..., Kill Yourself Live, Touch Me I'm Sick, Vortex of Lies, Suck You Dry, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, One Bad Actor, The Only Son of the Widow from Nain, 21st Century Pharisees
Encore: If I Think, You Stupid Asshole, Hate the Police, Fix Me
Notes: 'Creeps are Everywhere' was on the setlist after 'Suck You Dry,' but not played. Mark: "My amp crapped out at the beginning of 'Suck You Dry,' and once we got a new amp going we decided to take another stab at that song, but skip 'Creeps Are Everywhere.'" For this tour, rather than it being an amp Mark owns, they rented amps in New York City at the start of the tour. After, 'I Like it Small,' Guy comments favorably on the venue (and not on the rambunctious crowd) with, "It's nice and quiet and churchy in here). Steve breaks his high E string toward the end of 'Hey Neanderfuck,' but they bravely make it through the rest of the song. After 'Nerve Attack,' an audience member yells to play louder; Steve says, "We can't play as loud as Pissed Jeans," and laughs, while Guy adds, "They played too loud, really." Mark changes the third verse of 'Touch Me I'm Sick,' to "I'm up on stage, and I don't mind..." While they're spending five minutes on Mark's amp, Guy tells a couple jokes: "You want to hear a joke? A robot walks into a bar. The bartender says, 'We don't serve your type here'. The robot says [robot voice], 'One day you will'. ... So there's a wide-mouthed frog and he's sitting in the pond. And um, he's just hanging out. Different animals come down to the pond and first a deer. The wide-mouthed frog says to the deer, he says, 'I'm a wide-mouthed frog. I eat bugs and flies.' And the deer goes, 'Ok, I'm a deer and I eat grass.' Next a badger comes down...." And we never hear the rest of the joke because Mark has a working amp (from Body Spray), and Guy wraps it up with, "Count yourself lucky you've been spared the wide-mouthed frog joke. A favorite of the Maddison family Christmas gatherings." They huddle up by Dan after 'Suck You Dry,' and figure out what to do. Dan takes control and directs everyone to do 'Next Mass Extinction,' skipping 'Creeps Are Everywhere.' During the Pissed Jeans' set, their singer, Matt, recalled how he was over at a friend's house listening to The Queers. The friend then played a Mudhoney record, and when it was over, all Matt could think of was how he wished the friend would put The Queers back on. So, Mark tells a similar story at the start of the encore: "You know the summer of 1978 when I was 14 [ed note: 16], I was visiting my friend who was like, you know, the cool record collector guy. And he'd just gotten a couple records from the Columbia Record Club - these are LPs. You get like ten for ten cents. And he got Journey Next, that's before they had the singer that sung high. What else did he have? Oh God, ZZ Top Fandango!' [Crowd cheers] Oh, he got Styx Grand Illusion [crowd boos]. And he got I think the third Ambrosia record. And he got Devo Are We Not Men? [crowd really cheers]. And I remember this clearly, like, we listened to all of them and at the end of it I was just like, 'Man can we just hear that Ambrosia record one more time?'" After 'If I Think,' they start discussing what else to play. A few audience members take the chance to yell out requests, and Mark tells them, "Don't fucking tell us what to do. We have our own agenda." Mark changes "I need a girl who puts out" in 'You Stupid Asshole' to "I need a boy who puts out."

Notes: Mark: "The crowd was great!" They played St. Louis in 1992, then not until 1999. So, at the 1999 show, Mark promises that they won't take 7 years to return. But here we are and their return show has taken 20 years to happen. So, when Mark promises the crowd, "I promise we won't take 20 years to come back," someone in the crowd retorts, "We've heard that before!"

10/17/19 Mr. Small's Theatre. Millvale, PA
Supported By: Kid Congo Powers + The Pink Monkey Birds
Set: In 'N' Out of Grace, I Like it Small, Hey Neanderfuck, You Got it, Nerve Attack, Prosperity Gospel, The Farther I Go, Good Enough, Judgment Rage..., Kill Yourself Live, Touch Me I'm Sick, Vortex of Lies, Suck You Dry, Creeps Are Everywhere, Next Mass Extinction, F.D.K., Oh Yeah, I'm Now, Paranoid Core, One Bad Actor, The Only Son of the Widow from Nain, 21st Century Pharisees
Encore: Sweet Young Thing, Here Comes Sickness, The Money will Roll... (w/Kim Thayil), Hate the Police (w/Kim Thayil), Fix Me (w/Kim Thayil)
Notes: Kim Thayil of Soundgarden joins the band for three punk covers at the end of the encore. These are songs Mark doesn't play guitar on, so he uses Mark's amp, and Steve's backup semi-hollowbody Guild guitar. Steve's backup guitar is the same as his regular guitar, so Steve and Kim then have matching guitars. Mark introduces Kim by saying they pulled into Millvale this afternoon, and this somewhat homeless looking guy who'd been walking the streets of Millvale with a 12-pack of White Claw comes up and says, "Hey, guys" - and it was Kim. When they get to the solo on 'The Money will Roll...' Mark says, "Go Steve! Go Kim!" and they both solo at the same time.

10/18/19 Baltimore Soundstage. Baltimore, MD (95 min)
Supported By: Kid Congo Powers + The Pink Monkey Birds, The Richie White Orchestra, Murder
Notes: They've been playing the same run of songs to start a show all tour long. This time, when Mark was writing out the setlists, he wrote "Suck" for 'Suck You Dry' instead of 'Small' for 'I Like it Small.' It's the end of the tour, so the guys have this run of songs memorized by now. Mark, Steve, and Dan all start in on 'I Like it Small.' Guy is paying attention, so goes into 'Suck You Dry,' as written. They figure out the discrepancy by the time Mark starts singing. So, they sort things out. Mark: "Whoaaaa, what happened?" Dan: "Steve changed the set." Mark: "Sorry man, I fucked up when I wrote the setlist." But now Dan has read the setlist, and tries to do the drum into for 'Suck You Dry,' and Steve follows Dan, but then it falls apart when Mark doesn't join in. The band and crowd are amused by this. And finally an audience member at the front of the stage points out the problem to a buddy, and Steve overhears: "They have Suck You Dry twice on the set list." Steve jokes to this guy, "You have your eyes nearer to the set list ... We gotta do 'I Like it Small,' I think. We should do 'I Like it Small.'" Mark: "Normally at this point in the set it's just fucking plowing through, one song after the other. Tonight, I don't know, we're off our game somehow. Maybe we'll get back on...". Dan takes control and calls for a band huddle, where they figure things out, and laugh about it. Guy goes, "Ready? Break!" And they're finally all playing the same song. 'Prosperity Gospel' falls apart as soon as it begins. Dan gives a quick "One, two, three, four" count and they're right back in the song...until they get to the first verse, and they're out of sync again, so Guy and Mark stop while Dan and Steve keep going. Steve is trying to signal Dan about when to restart the song, but Dan is feeling his groove and doesn't see him. So, they just hit the main riff for about 20 seconds. That's enough, Dan counts off a four, and they're onto their third, successful, shot at the song. Afterward Mark tells the crowd, "Thank you for your kind indulgence." During 'Prosperity Gospel,' the crowd goes apeshit, with a big mosh pit front and center. This carries through the next several songs, regardless of whether those songs are high energy or not. It finally tapers off due to exhaustion as much as anything. But the crowd recovers and goes apeshit during the encore again. Mark introduces '21st Century Pharisees' with, "Ladies and gentlemen, we'll end the evening with a little dance." Audience member: "No!" Mark: "Yes. Oh, yes. You can say 'No' all you want, but once your ears hear the music, you're gonna move." When they're done with the main set, and leaving the stage, Mark thanks all the opening bands, and mentions Murder as Muuuurrrddeerrrr, using a drawn-out, melodramatic, sinister voice. During the encore, Mark says, "OK, so a couple of days ago we get a box, it comes to our hotel room, and it's addressed to Jenny, who's back there working march. And we figure it's probably some more t-shirts or something. But the weird thing is, the ship from address is from Waldo Jefferies [a reference to the Velvet Underground's 'The Gift'], and we didn't open it for a couple of days. And then this morning, we open up the box. Luckily the knife wasn't too long and sharp [another reference] and out of the box comes Kim Thayil [of Soundgarden]." Out walks Kim, who again sets up with Steve's backup gutiar and Mark's amp. Mark: "Kim is gonna help us, help you, learn how to get a lot of money. He does seminars at hotels and sometimes we help out." And they go into three punk covers, starting with 'The Money will Roll...'

Notes: Mudhoney plays Yakima for the first time since 12/27/96. The venue is a 100-year-old former Christian Science church. Mark jokes about the town name: "It's good to be back in Yakima. And see a bunch of Yaki-maniacs! ...You can't say that about [neighboring] Ellensburg." Before they start, 'The Only Son...' Mark tells the crowd: "The next two songs are religiously themed. And we're in a church. So, I just don't have that shit in me, I'm sorry. For me it's not (MC5-style), 'Brothers and sisters, are you ready?!' It's more like (old man voice), 'Brothers and sisters, please turn your hymnal to...'" When they come out for the encore, Mark plays a bit of the main riff of the Stooges' 'Real Cool Time.'
