ACF West Coast Newsletter IV.4 Dec. 1997 editor Gaius Stern Hello everyone, This issue is mostly corrections and buzzers. Other items include the ACF website, Earl Cahill's quiz, and a few announcements. --------- ACF WEBSITE The Academic Competition Federation has a webpage which lists contacts, events, and other info. You can find it by setting your browser to http://www.glue.umd.edu/~maqt/acf/Welcome.html NEW QUIZBOWL WEBSITE and INFORMATION BANK The purpose of this site is to have a central repository of information and resources about the sport of Quiz Bowl as a whole. This includes NAQT, CBI, ACF, and everything in between. Also, this might be an easier way to pass along information to newer players and teams. Everything you need should either be here, or listed as a link from here. The address is http://sta.umbc.edu/~qb UT-DALLAS WINS THE DALLAS DOES BERKELEY II (thanks Eric Owens) UT Dallas did run the second Dallas Does Berkeley tournament, despite a false alarm of cancellation. Some time ago, Earl Cahill of BYU set up a little classical music quiz from the quiz bowl group. He wants to know if the site works. If you contact him fast, he may extend his offer for a free meal at some tournament that both he and whoever responds with all the correct answers attends. Individual work only. CHe says al's Chinese at Berkeley and some lemon chicken would be ideal. The quiz is at http://erdos.math.byu.edu/~cahille/music/ BYU PERPETUAL MOTION V invitation Brigham Young University will again host their annual torunametn the last weekend of January. The PM 5 is the oldest torunament in the Rockies. Last year it consisted of fifteen or more rounds so that every team played every other team at least twice. The event has traditionally been free as a precursor to other events such as Regionals which often follow closely. The host asks only that each participant write a blind packet so that all other teams may play on it. If BYU and Wisconsin form a question trade, it will be possible again to play a great number of games. For more information contact Earl Cahill and he will refer you to the TD. STANFORD CARDINAL CLASSIC EIGHT Stanford will again put on their February event, this year the CC 8. Since the invitation has not reached me, all I know is ther contact, Sarah Kline. Write to her If you have questions, or to register a team, . I could not find a website or e-mail for very many of them. The Zeecraft system is the only one I have seen and I think it is hard to use unless you have large hands. It is the system recommended by CBI, as I recall. If you drop a postcard to any of these, please let me know what they say about heir product, cost, etc. Quiz Equipment- owned by Steve Kirkman. 703 N. Each player has a small box witha little button you push and a little light. The console also has lights to show who rang in. They say they can accomodate your needs, so I imagine they can make systems for many players. I can not be sure of the pricing because they refer to teams without saying how many players are on each team. It is wisest to contact them rather than rely on my guesswork. Its price is pretty low, even if you are in the US and must pay extra shipping charges from Canada. Players activate buzzer with thumb. It runs on a 6 volt adapter. "Challenger I, II, or III" Each player has a little box with a buzzer and a light on it. Everyone can see who rang in first. They sell several different models, so I advise calling and getting their brochures. Prices refer to "Challenger II" but are old and probably out of date. Models for 8 - 16 players can be ordered and they rent out for weekends, as well. Some players have complained the hand-held buzzer is very large and not designed for players with small hands. It is similar to the size of a ski pole handle. Major advantages: none Special features: built in clock can be ordered for extra Prices (PROBABLY out of date): x8 players = $445 x12 players = $545 x16 players = $635 Address/phone: Zeecraft Tech.
