UC Berkeley Quizbowl is pleased to announce the Bear Cub Classic III, a high school quizbowl competition for new and returning players on October 27, 2001 in Dwinelle Hall at UC-B.We are especially eager to include players and schools that have not played quizbowl before. Bear Cub is open to any team which competes in quizbowl, certamen, academic decathalon, or any such similar activity.

Quizbowl is a game like Jeopardy. Each game has two teams of up to four slots (plus alternates). Substitution is permitted at the half, if desired. Schools are encouraged to enter multiple teams. Each game has 20 TU questions. A toss-up is open to any player, though only the first guess from each team is permitted. We play with a buzzer system to determine which player signalled first. If a player answers a TU correctly, that team gets 10 points and a bonus question for 30 more points. After the bonus, a new TU is read to both teams. Questions are on history, science and math, literature, mythology, geography, social sciences, art, music, politics, etc.

This year at Bear Cub we will schedule every team to play all the other teams in their pool, plus some semi-fimal matches. There is no waiting in between rounds. Win or lose, teams keep playing. Teams will play approximately seven games. Teams who lose games can still qualify for the semi-finals, and player ratings are unaffected by win-loss record. We plan to post the running statistics every round, both win-loss records and also how many questions each player has answered. Given that this is the first quizbowl of the year, it is our intention to run a fairly informal atmosphere. The focus is to have fun with the activity and to learn a few things in the process. The top teams will win a trophy, but we hope players concentrate more on the learning aspect and the teamwork than on the gold medal. Please remember that multiple teams from the same school may play. Our endeavor is to permit more students to participate in academic competition. We want this activity to be inclusive and rewarding for all who participate.

The rules at Bear Cub are the same as those used at Cal Classic. All toss-ups are worth 10 points (no power toss-ups). Teams will find Bear Cub excellent preparation for the other local competitions (Riordan Crusader Bowl, Bentley HS Quizbowl, CAL Classic 6, etc.). We ask participating teams who can bring a buzzer system please to do so. We will provide a discount for bringing a buzzer or an experienced volunteer (score keeper or moderator). If money is an issue for any team, please let us know. We can make special arrangements for one or two teams. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. A group of sample questions will be made available (free of course).

Entry fee: Base $75.00 for a first team
-$10 for each additional team
-$10 for each buzzer system
-$ 5 for each experienced volunteer (score keeper)
-$20 per team for prepaid entry fee postmarked by 10/13

EXAMPLE: Thus, a school sends 2 teams and brings one buzzer system.
Payment is sent by mail and recvd for the early discount.
Entry fee for 2 teams = ($75 + $65 - $10 - $20 - $20) = $90.
That means for $45 each, the teams will play at least 7 games.
Minimum fee per team is $40.
In addition, each team is to pay a $30 deposit, to be returned at the end of the day or 5 pm, whichever comes first, in return for staying for all of its rounds and allowing its buzzer systems (if any) to be used throughout the tournament. In the past teams have left early, depriving other teams of the chance to play games. We do not feel this is fair to the other teams, so we are adding this incentive to stay through the day.

Please include an unofficial roster of your team(s) and how long each player has been playing quiz bowl.
