Gaius Stern, West Coast ACF Director writes: Congratulations to Stanford University for winning the 1997 West Coast ACF Regional Championship. In a very tight field, the top two teams had to be determined by head-to-head records because three teams were 9-4 at the end of prelims. Because Stanford and a Berkeley team had split the wins in their 2 prelim matches, a final match decided it all (it was a Chicago packet) as the best of 3. The final score: Stanf 300-175, Berkeley. A job well done by Roger Lee, Doug Bone, Sherman Lo, and Brad Harris (hence the joke: 3 grads and a Brad). Congrats also to Guy Branam, David Wasserman, and especially to Phil Huang, who earned the respect of all with his many impressive early buzzes in their 2nd place finish. Berkeley took 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. BYU came in 5th. I extend congratulations also to ASU and UC-Davis, whose inexperienced teams won many games and new team trophies, to boot. The MVPs were Phil Huang-Berk, Partha S Bannerjee-Berk, Brian Moore-ASU, Evan Fletcher-UC Davis, and Patrick Friel-UCLA, and Norm Gillespie-BYU. Honorable mention, Roger Lee-Stanford and Mike Bennett-Berk. Competition between the top seven teams was very fierce. Going into the last round, 4 teams were basically tied in record and we were worried it would take us a long time to determine a tie-breaker. The BYU and UCLA teams obliged us by defeating the Berkeley teams in the final match of the prelims, thus reconfiguring the members of the tie-breaker. There was plenty of food and drink to go around. This year's breakfast included cappuchino, coffee, 13 dozen bagels, salmon spread, and fruit. In the middle of the day, someone (unnamed) disappeared with about 2-3 dozen bagels and I did not get to take any home for myself. That is really the only thing that went wrong, from my point of view. Studying Roman history is important: :-) I was needed to rule on two Roman history question problems, in one round the answer Caracalla was printed for Commodius (or vice versa) ... and in a later round - in a outcome reversal, the required answers _Valeria Messalina_ and _Poppeia Sabina_ were over-ruled in favor of _Messalina_ and _Poppeia_. That was the most important ruling in the tourney. So, when are ACF Nationals? Good luck to all other teams attending. And now, like the gates of the temple of Janus, with the conclusion of the last ACF Regional, I throw open the discussion to all about how the respective tournaments ran, questions, etc. (Jeff, thanks for posting this.) Gaius Stern West Coast ACF guy BERNARD: We were quite happy with Aristotle's cosmos. Personally, I preferred it. Fifty-five crystal spheres. . . is my idea of a satisfying universe. UCLA Brasidas received a BYE! From Gaius: Hello all and thank you to those who came. The 1997 ACF West Coast Regional Champion is Stanford University whose team of Roger Lee, Brad Harris, Sherman Lo, and Doug Bone sqeezed into a final game against Berkeley Bogomils (Phil Huang, Guy Branam, David Wasserman, + Gina Braden FRI pm). The final score was approx 300-175. The field was very tight with several upsets in teh final round fo the tournament which cast the identities of the top two teams into some uncertainty. A squeeker of a victory by Stanford in OVERTIME against a Berkeley team (?? Berk Donatists) and UCLA's defeat of Berk Bogomils, and BYU's victory over Berkeley Cathars -- all in the last round of regulation play - reconfigured the outcome. The two Berkeley teams likely to emerge in a field of split records had to settle for 3rd and 4th while Stanford and the Bogomils went on the play-off. A word of credit is due to the team from UC Davis who took many losses Fri pm and did not let that hinder their efforts on Saturday, where Davis won almost every game. UCLA also made a remarkable bounceback and compiled an impressive string of victories - culminating in the victory in the last round on Sat pm. The experienced MVPs were Phil Huang-Berk, Partha S Bannerjee-Berk, Evan Fletcher-UC Davis, Brian Moore-ASU, and Patrick Friel-UCLA, and Norm Gillespie-BYU (order may not be right). Honorable mention also includes Roger Lee-Stanford and Mike Bennett-Berk. A full post will soon follow to the a.c.c-b and also an article in the ACF newsletter. I would like to thank the people who made this event run smoothly, the moderators David Dixon, David Levinson, Nick Meyer, Eric Crane, Rafi Laufer, Matt Baker, and Steven Ricks of BYU. Also volunteers who helped out such as Elisa Cooper (stats), Yaraslava, the scorekeepers from BYE rounds, and Arun (schedule, computer), and Partha (formatting, printing). It was fun to have many firends altogethor in the same place. BYU's two teams, ASU, Zach from UCSB, Nils, and of course Davis and Stanford. Hope to see all of you and more next year if I can still handle this commitment.
