1999 ACF Regionals Results

Mid-Atlantic

The Mid-Atlantic region had a double round robin with seven teams; Old Dudes was a bastard team. As Maryland A went 1-1 against Virginia in the round robin, they had to play a final game. Thanks also to James Dinan, who graciously volunteered to read.

At the end of this the top two teams, Harvard Friggin' Huge and Cornell, were tied at 24 Sumerian Love Poems apiece, and they played against each other in a 30 tossup Battle Royale. [Cornell had defeated HFH in the full round robin 185-180. Harvard evened the score in the bracket match-up, 375-175.]

Harvard Friggin' Huge defeated Cornell 370-185 to win the Northeast Regional ACF championship.

Congratulations to Harvard for their victory, and to Cornell for making the finals.

Also, many thanks to Jake Parrott who for the second time in three weeks ran a dang swell tournament; to Amy who successfully slaved for hours over the stats; and to all the people who helped out by moderating: Adam Fagin, Kyle Pope, Willy Jay, Matt Boggie, Paul Lujan, and the members of the MIT QB team.

Individual scoring awards were given to the top two scorers in the full round robin play - Cornell's own Matt Colvin and Aaron from Yale Miller Time. In the complete play stats (not counting the Battle Royale) they maintained their positions, as seen below, with Sahir (HNSW), David (HFH), Bill (ColA), Guy (HFH), and Prasun (Cor) also breaking 30 PPG.

Midwest

The ACF Midwest Regional Championship was held this weekend at the University of Chicago. Teams were divided into 2 divisions, in which round robins were played, with the top 4 from each moving on to a playoff RR. The top 2 teams then played a best 2-of-3 final. Tiebreaker was point differential, because I was finally convinced not to use head-to-head by the argument on the qb list last month.

Stats follow, but first:

The tournament ran an hour ahead of the planned schedule. This is purely due to wonderful teams & a wonderful volunteer (well, they got pizza...) staff. Thank you to everyone who helped out, including moderators Alice Chou, John Edwards, Mitchell Szczepanczyk, Lorin Burte, Eric Hillemann, John Tangren, and a guy from BGSU whose name I cannot recall (very very sorry.). A special huge thank you to Mike Altman, statkeeper extraordinaire, who had new stats up after _every_ round, on time.

On to results:

In the final, Chicago A beat Illinois Malignant 360-60 & 235-230.

Final Team Results, including all rounds (1st & 2nd RRs):

Hing Chan
Georgia Tech Academic Team

West

There was a circle of death between Stanford Asmodeus, BYU Albigenses, and Berkeley Asimov, each 6-1 after the first round-robin among all the teams.

The second, bracketed round robins (3 brackets, 3 teams each) broke the circle of death, with Stanford up one game over BYU going into the playoffs.

Stanford won the playoffs 425-80, and won ACF Regionals 1999 - West Coast. Congratulations to a very fine team!

Playoff stats (Round by GaTech):

Note: Boy of Destiny would have been our very own list moderator Rob Hentzel. Unfortunately, last minute problems prevented him from coming.
