As mentioned previously, Harvard Cossell won Terrier Tussle 8. Congratulations to Guy Jordan; Sahir Islam; Andrew Marcus; and Rob Chan. Here's how they did it: Terrier Tussle 8 split 17 teams (was to be 18 but Wellesley B dropped out) into two divisions of round-robin play. After this, the top four teams from each bracket entered a modified double-elimination. (The modification was that each team played all five rounds before the final series, even though some games lacked playoff implications.) The rest of the field entered the "Reserve Bracket," playing five cross-division games against each other; the team with the best overall record from that field emerged as the reserve champion. STANDINGS AFTER ROUND ROBIN Head-to-head was sufficient to break all ties. Team Name Division Win Loss Points Opp Pts Diff/GM Harv. High 4 8 Penn New Class 3 9 MIT Blossom 3 9 Dartmouth B 3 9 MIT Buttercup 2 10 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Terrier Tussle 8 had a remarkable field: While the 8 playoff teams clearly distinguished themselves from the rest of the field, there was very little real difference among the 8. This is especially impressive given that six of the eight teams were from Harvard. (In the round robins, non-playoff teams went 1-35 against playoff teams: SUNY-Albany beat MIT Mojo Jojo 85-60 on a difficult Round 8 Harvard pack.) L. Ron Harvard appeared to be the favorite going into the playoffs; but after running the table in their bracket, they had trouble with the other bracket's Harvard teams. In the Reserve division, Dartmouth A beat Wellesley on the last question. Had it gone the other way, three teams would have all been 6-6. Dartmouth A, Wellesley, and MIT Bubbles would have had a circle of death. Dartmouth A beat MIT Bubbles 165-105 in Round 6 (pack by Penn); MIT Bubbles beat Wellesley 90-70 in Round 12 (pack by Wisconsin); Our next tie-breaker for circles of death was to be Head-to-Head LOSS Point Differential; that is, who came closest to winning their head-to-head losses? Under this system, MIT Bubbles would have been inferior to Wellesley; Wellesley would have had to beat Dartmouth by at least 20 points to take home reserve honors. Ron Harvard for winning second, to Dartmouth A for winning the "reserve" bracket playoff, and especially to newcomer Wellesley, for impressing us not only with your academic prowess, but also your sportsmanlike demeanors and winning the "Swellest Team" award. Thanks go out to all of the guest moderators, Mark Stalloff, Jim Bales, Jake Parrot, Greg Sorenson, and to the teams who dutifully kept score during their byes. I'd like to say that of all the tournaments at BU I've ever been involved with, this one was by far the most fun, the smoothest, and the most closely contested. Special thanks go out to all the teams for making it a wonderful T8. I'm sure stat guru Matt Bruce will soon bombard you with all sorts of individual and team statistics (special thanks to him, too, for his fearless editing efforts) just as soon as he takes a quick nap. Once again, thanks for a wonderful tournament. ---------------------------------------- > Thanks go out to all of the guest moderators, Mark Stalloff, Jim Bales, > Jake Parrot, Greg Sorenson, and to the teams who dutifully kept score > during their byes. Also to guest moderator Tim Coleman of SUNY-Albany; and thanks to Mark Zimmer of Wisconsin's ELVIS; and the Stanford people; we used five ELVIS packs and a couple Cardinal Classic. Internal kudos are at the end too. I'd like to single out Penn for thanks and praise, especially because we couldn't in our wildest dreams have expect 3 Penn teams. They traveled 8 hours to NARROWLY MISS glory on several counts: a) We had nine (9) medals to award the individual top scorers; Penn players finished 10th and 11th. b) Penn Bayside High was the third best team in the playoffs, losing the last game of the double-elimination "loser's bracket" prior to the final. They had a legitmate protest (details to be discussed as soon as I'm sure Cardinal Classic is finished, per pack security) and, on the "hypothetical bonus," fell five points short of making the protest relevant. c) The "Swellest Team" (TM-Matt Boggie) award went to Wellesley by ONE VOTE over Penn Bayside High. I believe MIT Bubbles also drew support. Long story short, I hope it was still worth the trip for the Penn folks and look forward to seeing y'all again, TRASHionals if not earlier. > I'm sure stat guru Matt Bruce will soon bombard you with all sorts of > individual and team statistics (special thanks to him, too, for his > fearless editing efforts) just as soon as he takes a quick nap. Coming soon. Matt (Humble pack-editor/statistician.) P.S. Astonishingly T8 seemed to avoid any major problems. There were potential crises but TD Boggie nipped them all in the bud and avoided others through relentless advance preparation. Thanks, Matt. Thanks to Mike Hoey-Lukakis for proofreading packs; the ones he got to had almost no typos, while the one or two that I couldn't get to him in time were significantly more annoying on that count.
