Western Invitational Tournament IX Results

Held Friday and Saturday, October 19th-20th, 2001
University of California At Berkeley

Wheeler Hall, UCB Campus -

On the weekend of Saturday, October 20th, 2001, the University of California at Berkeley Quiz Bowl Club held its 9th Annual Western Invitational Tournament which included an mACF tournament, a mirror of the FOGHAT Trash Tournament from U of Missouri-Rolla (aka Unabuzzer XI), a singles tournament written by Matthew Weiner out of U of Pittsburgh and the 2nd Berkeley Audio Recall Shindig - 90s edition - compiled by Matt Levine. This was the first time we ran a Quad-Event before and as some teams did not want to come back for Sunday we finished up Saturday - I think getting home by about 3am (though partly my own fault). Additionally I'd like to thank Simon Fraser U for coming down from British Columbia to be with us. I had the pleasure of housing them for the weekend and they were great company. So I hope everyone comes out again next year for WIT X and hopefully as much if not more fun. Thanks to all on behalf of tournament directors Matt Levine and Eok Ngo.

On with the results...

FOGHAT Mirror

The team of Andrew Jackson's Second Grade Spelling Bee (Jon, Steve, Kirsten and Kathryn) took the tournament beating out The Christ Punchers (Nick, Gina, Juliana, Eok). We didn't keep individual stats and the second round robin was not completed as intended so those are all the results as of now. The top scorers in the tournament were most likely Jon Pennington followed by Nick Meyer though unconfirmed.

Western Invitational Tournament IX

Berkeley A (Seth Teitler, Steve Kaplan, Juliana Froggatt, Selene Koo) and Stanford A (Prasun Ray, Kenny Easwaran, Roger Bhan, Mark Tong) but by virtue of going 2-0 against them Berkeley A was declared the Champion. The tournament's top scorer was Seth Teitler with 46.82ppg followed close behind by Suzy Rivoire of Stanford B with 43.50pgg with newcomer Yogesh Raut, Jerry Vinokurov and Roger Bhan rounding out the top 5. Mark Discordia Singles Tournament

Matthew Weiner of the University of Pittsburgh wrote a singles tournament which we had the pleasure of mirroring at our site that weekend. We played 3 seeding rounds out of which emerged a top 16 who then played double elimination. Congratulations to Prasun Ray for his victory in the finals over Seth Teitler. 3rd place went to Nick Meyer. I believe Matt Levine (arwmatt@uclink.berkeley.edu) or Eok Ngo (eok@uclink.berkeley.edu) have the rest of the results.

BARS II

Matt Levine, after success this summer with BARS I, decided to go at it again with another Audio Recall game. This time, however, seeing as how Jon Pennington won rather resoundingly this summer, Matt decided to go to an all-90s version, titling the tournament "A tournament Jon might not win". Well, Jon still won, beating Ross Ritterman who (well I think so) gave him a run for his money. Amar Hatti, who is usually trash averse, took 3rd.

Beatles Cover Round II

Oh yeah, Jon Pennington, having gone through his record collection yet again found us more clips of Beatles songs covered by other bands. So he did his 2nd Audio Recognition round which was won by Juliana Froggatt who took home a Ramones keychain.

For additional questions regarding WIT IX e-mail either Matt or Eok (whose e-mails are above).
