New Dual-Purpose Recycling and Refuse Bins Piloted on Sproul

by Howard Chong

The campus is currently conducting a pilot on Sproul to test out new containers to promote recycling on campus. These containers contain three compartments, one for beverage container recycling, one for mixed paper recycling, and one for trash.

"I think the bins look wonderful," remarked Lisa Bauer, the Manager of Campus Recycling and Refuse Services. "When they were delivered, I saw several students stop and admire them."

These bins were selected by Chancellor Robert Berdahl who saw them on a trip to tour campuses in the Midwest. Recently, Chancellor Berdahl remarked at the UC Berkeley Recycling Summit, held in February, that the ultimate goal is to make recycling as easy as throwing out garbage. This marks the first step in efforts to address recycling access so that wherever trash disposal is available, recycling is too.

These bins were purchased partly to coincide with Earth Day 2001 and Cal Day festivities. If the pilot is successful, the campus will work towards situating these containers throughout campus. Donations are being solicited from people who would like to support the efforts of expanding recycling on campus. For more information, contact Lisa Bauer
