The Student Recycling Education Coordinator program was born on February 2, 2001, at the Chancellor's Recycling Summit. Garth Schultz wrote a proposal that the Chancellor adopted and Lisa Bauer, with the help of Howard Chong, successfully implemented.
Ryan Buckley and Heidi Obermeit began working for CRRS in July of the same year, trying to make the SREC and CRRS as visible as possible. They organized the first annual Recycling

| Week and Berkeley Blue In Green Art and Design Contest. They also successfully created the new RREC position that debuted in residence halls February 2002. Fritzie De Mata and Tami Lau, both former RRECs, then took over and continued in the task of building recycling momentum on campus.
In 2004, the program was renamed the Student Sustainability Education Coordinator program and expanded to include sustainability, which includes energy and water conservation, green purchasing, recycling, reuse and so much more.
It was not easy getting the original SREC position finalized - the idea was stagnant for years until the opportunity came to bring it to fruition. It is the hope of all of us here at the recycling office that the newly named-SSECs will continue to have a place in the Cal community.
