Blood Services

ARC @ Cal's Blood Services is among the larger branches of the Club.  Not only do we sponsor and volunteer for almost every on-campus blood drive, but we have a good time doing it!

Canteening is one of the most popular volunteer activities offered by ARC @ Cal.  As a canteen volunteer, you will be sitting behind a table full of goodies and socializing with donors.

So why canteen?

· It doesn't require a lot of your time.  You can volunteer once a month, once a semester, or even "retire" for a semester if your schedule is simply too busy.

· The volunteer shifts are only 2 hours and can easily be fit into most hectic schedules!

· All of the canteen shifts with ARC @ Cal are on-campus at easily-accessible locations such as the Pauley Ballroom in the MLK student union.

· You can meet and greet lots of fellow Bears and make some new friends while you're simply doing your volunteer job.

· It gives you a reason to take a short break from studying! =D  Just because you go to Cal does NOT mean that your life must be devoted to memorizing every last fiber in the over-priced textbooks-- even if it IS chem.

· FREE COOKIES AND JUICE!  Try Sandie's Pecan Shortbread ;)

Other Opportunities:

Phone Team—takes group trip to the Oakland Blood Center and phone past donors to remind them to donate again. (Free Pizza!)

Publicity Team—informs the public about the requirements for donating blood and distributes information about upcoming blood drives.

Disaster Services /Together We Prepare

ARC @ Cal wants school students to be safer and better prepared than ever. To help ensure this, the ARC has developed a national Together We Prepare (TWP)- Schools program with the goal of providing a safe, positive, interactive and prepared environment where students can learn and grow. Through the TWP - Schools initiative, partnerships between the ARC and elementary/middle/high schools are helping to provide our youth with valuable training in ways to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. As a volunteer you will be required to attend an orientation and possible additional training. After training, ARC @ Cal volunteers will be working with various school districts, grades K-12, in the Oakland, Berkeley and Albany areas by going directly to local schools and educating students on disaster preparedness. Our areas of focus will include:

Prevention

Curriculum Goal: Reduce the incidence of accidents and injuries as well as violence committed by students outside of school. Prevention program include Exploring Humanitarian Law and HIV/AIDS Education.

Preparedness

Curriculum Goal: Prepare students, administrators, staff and parents to respond confidently to unexpected situations, including violence, natural disasters, terrorism and other emergencies. Preparedness programs include Masters of Disaster, Basic Aid Training and Facing Fear: Helping Young People Deal with Terrorism and Tragic Events.

Response

Curriculum Goal: Improve response to and minimize the impact of violent incidents and other emergencies. Response curriculum will include Mass Care: An Overview and Shelter Operations.

How to join?

Disaster Services is not a separate line of service. In the event that a disaster occurs, our disaster response will be led by all ExComm members. We encourage you to keep first aid kits and emergency food/water rations and learn the proper steps to take in the event of a fire, earthquake, or whatever emergency your area might be prone to.

International Services

The Red Cross is international. Each country has its own Red Cross or Red Crescent society; the American Red Cross is just one of those societies. We are part of an international community. International Services helps to teach and publicize International Humanitarian Law (in other words, the Geneva Conventions), link up family members torn apart by circumstances such as war or natural disaster, prepare people for and respond to natural disasters overseas (such as the tsunami), and work on primary health care programs, such as... the Measles Initiative.

“Each year, a disease barely remembered by most Americans kills nearly one million children, a half million in Africa alone. It kills more children than AIDS, tuberculosis or malnutrition.” Yet, all this can be prevented by vaccinating a child for less than $1. The Measles Initiative, launched in 2001, is a collaborative effort of the American Red Cross, World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, United Nations Foundation, and the United Nations Children’s Fund to prevent 1.2 million deaths by the year 2005 and eradicate measles from Africa. Check out the Measles Initiative web site at measlesinitiative.org!

How you can help: Join the International Services committee and raise funds for this worthy cause. Use your creativity to put on events to bring awareness and raise money.

This is a great opportunity if you like working with kids!
