Dance in the Rain

A leaf struggled against the wind
On a quiet day, dying yet glorious still.
It fell defeated into the stream
And was borne away, spinning.
It was afraid and yearned for its home
But was carried to the great river
Who said tenderly, “Do not fear any longer.”
And it faded away, dreaming…

Do you remember the day we met?
(Did you feel the world turning?)
Like tattered butterflies
(Did you feel the universe fold?)
Colliding in the storm
(With a soft sigh, the corners met)
Our torn wings beat against each other
(And we sailed the stars)
In exquisite pain, but we shared it.
(On the crescent moon…)

When the sky bathes the earth in rain
In the cities with warm lights
People are opening umbrellas
Like mechanical blossoms.
But the real flowers
Drink in the life and sing,
And the drops of life kiss their petals.
Mother birds whisper “shh, shh”
Tucking precious ones under their wings.
Come, frolic, dance with me
With our hands clasped tightly
With movements that do not need to be taught
Let the water run down our arms
To hang shivering at our touching fingertips
And I will tell you everything,
The secret that threatened
To burst from inside me…

(A sparrow flies from a bush, behind me.
Is it because you approached?)

Let’s run laughing through green fields
And lay against a tree made golden by the sun
And listen to music on river-stones
By the rushing sweet water
Into which a trembling leaf fell…
