Q: What kind of experience do I need to be a member of Satrang?
A: NO experience is needed to be a member. There are no auditions to be
a dancer. Satrang caters to dancers of all levels of expertise.
Advanced dancers have the opportunity to choreograph dances and
everyone is given the opportunity to try new dance styles as we
encourage dancers to experiment with different types of movement and
music. The only dances that require training are the classical dance
forms.
Q: What time commitment is necessary to be a dancer?
A: Practices start near the start of each semester and are intensive
for approximately 4-6 weeks. During this time, each group will hold 6
hours of practices per week. Once the dance is completed, practices
will occur on an as needed basis for upcoming performances and
presentations. In addition to practices, all members are expected to
attend 3 of the 5 workshops offered each semester on South Asian and
non-South Asian dance forms.
Q: How can I get involved if I can’t make the time commitment to be a dancer?
A: Satrang will be holding 2 hour workshops throughout the semester on
South Asian and non-South Asian dance forms such as Bhangra, Raas,
Salsa and Stomp. They are great opportunities to learn about the dance
styles. Also there are other tasks such as tech support, costumes,
props and fundraising that will be assigned to individuals if you are
interested in getting involved in the administrative aspect of the
organization.
Q: What kinds of dances do you offer?
A: Spring 2007 dances include Bhangra, Raas, Hindi Film Dance, Kuchipudi,
Bharatanatyam, and Fusion.
We are continually looking to expand our repertoire. If you have
experience in any dance styles, whether they are listed or not (for
example, Lavani, Marathi, Bihu), we would love to have you join the
troupe.
Q: How do I sign up to become a member or learn more about Satrang?
A: Member sign-up occurs at the end of each semester for the following
semester and at the start of the academic year. Be on a look-out for
the next sign-up meeting. If you would like to receive notices about
events such as workshops and sign-up meetings, email Satrang Exec (on
the Contacts page) with your name and email address and we will add you
to our mailing list.
