Satrang (“Seven Colours”) is a premier south asian dance troupe at University of California-Berkeley. Satrang plays a significant role on campus and in the community in encouraging understanding of South Asia through the medium of dance. Dance is an integral part of South Asian culture. It is linked to the history and people of the region, originating in their customs and practices. There are hundreds of South Asian dance forms and each provides a glimpse into the lives and times of the people who traditionally performed them. The music, the costumes, and the words, when presented with the background allow people, regardless of their prior knowledge of South Asia, to better understand the region. The diversity of the styles highlight the myriad of peoples and languages. Thus, though dance, Satrang strives to increase South Asian awareness. |
