History
Satrang was a vision which was turned into reality by Heena Patel at the University of California-Berkeley. Founded in the summer of 2003, the troupe was established for several reasons: to share the joy and beauty of dance and to use dance as a means of counteracting the lack of awareness about South Asia. The group was to be open to all who were interested.
With the support of several dedicated individuals, Satrang began its journey with forty members and seven dance styles, ranging from classical to modern in nature. By its second semester, the troupe had doubled in size and held numerous seminars for local schools, hospitals and campus. Satrang also strove to perform styles not widely performed in the area, such as Kuchipudi, Ghoomar and Mujra. Its two shows were also well received by the community.
Within a year, the troupe has fully established itself in the college sphere and is continuing to expand its presence in the community by starting an after-school dance program at Willard Middle School in Berkeley and increasing its educational outreach.
What We Do
Satrang firmly believes that in order to teach, one must first learn. Thus, the educational aspects of the group originate with its members’ understanding. Aside from learning one’s particular dance style, the troupe as a whole learns about each of the dances Satrang performs. An educational booklet on past and present dance styles is provided to each member to serve this purpose.
In addition, to allow the members and community to experiment with different styles and movements, Satrang holds numerous two hour workshops throughout the year on South Asian and non-South Asian dance styles. In addition, Satrang holds seminars for local elementary schools and hospitals on South Asia, introducing the region through its dances.
