I am an intended Economics student at UC Berkeley and I hope to be a public accountant after graduating. I am involved in various student groups on campus, the primary one being Beta Alpha Psi professional business fraternity. Aside from my academic and professional aspirations, I am also a competitive ballroom dancer. I have over eight years of experience and am a regular finalist in International Pre-Championship Standard (Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep) competitions. Ballroom dancing, along with hanging out with my friends, balances me out so that I am never overworked in school and never bored.
I chose internet gambling as my subject matter because it is something that has always interested me. I have often contemplated playing poker online. As always, before I decide to participate in an activity, especially an online one, I make sure to thoroughly check it out to make sure that it is something that I really want to do. I was turned away from internet poker early on by an experience that one of my closest friends had. He was playing online and won over $1,500 in a matter of a couple of hours. Unsurprisingly, he was ecstatic about it. The next day he played again and unfortunately had some bad beats and managed to lose everything that he had won the day before and more. After researching internet gambling further through this project, I am now convinced that internet gambling is no good.
I faced a variety of obstacles in researching internet gambling. Notably, the majority of available sources were from the late 1990s. I was concerned that some of these sources may be outdated. However, upon further analysis, I found that many were still relevant and gave valuable insights into the nature online gaming. Another obstacle I ran into was that there were many facts about internet gambling, but few theories, which left me with the difficult task of making connections between online gaming and its impact on society where few or no connections had been made before.
In creating this website, I tried as best I could to stay simple because I think that it is easier and more pleasant for visitors to view my content without being distracted by various flashing signs and blinking objects. The site is organized in a linear fashion, from offering a brief overview of the internet gambling market in the Introduction, to discussing the legal issues involved and the impact on society. I conclude with some final thoughts on internet gambling and what I feel must be done about it. Enjoy!
