About Us

In 2004, sophomore Albert Wu was hit with a stunning realization. Though Cal Berkeley was a cornucopia of people, cultures, and activities, it was missing one key ingredient: a Scrabble club. Nowhere at the university, he observed, was there an organization dedicated to teaching students essential knowledge and skills that will prepare them for the real world, such as which words contain a Q not followed by U (QAT, QAID, FAQIR, …) or how to find an opening on the board for that 102-point bingo. So Albert pioneered the Cal Scrabble Club, charged with providing students with "a comfortable environment for recreational and competitive Scrabble play."

Today, the Cal Scrabble Club is going strong. Throughout the school year, 40 student members come together to enjoy semiweekly recreational Scrabble play, culminating in a spring tournament which raises funds for a local literacy organization. By bringing students together for a relaxing yet stimulating hiatus from academia, this club elevates verbal ability while expanding horizons.

We hope you'll stop by and Scrabble with us!
