The Saul Williams Mixtape
I think this could stir up quite a discussion as it has here and here. One of the interesting points of contention centers around the statements:
can instrumental music be said to carry a commercial or non-commercial message? if so, can different lyrics subvert that message?
and
how about the other way around? can these commercial beats be subverting the lyrical content?
As a DJ/wannabe producer, I am really interested in this argument. Can the beat for "Wait" carry the same misogyny as the regular version? Would it undermine any other lyrics (no matter HOW 'conscious') that I might throw on it? Especially since it does make an appearance on the SFHH mixtape...
