Welcome to the Society of Hong Kong and Chinese Affairs! My name is Victor and I am currently a junior at Cal, double majoring in Asian American Studies and Asian Studies with an emphasis on China. I am a second generation Chinese American San Franciscan native, and grew up in the North Beach and Chinatown districts. I am proud to say my ancestral roots originate from Toishan County, Szeyup Region of Guangdong Province in southern China. Joining SHKCA in my sophomore year, I enjoyed SHKCA’s club atmosphere and casual social academic setting. It is my honor to seve as your president this year and I hope to continue SHKCA’s excellence in promoting Chinese culture and East Asian Culture, raising awareness of the development in the Far East, and providing a friendly social environment for the UC Berkeley community. SHKCA’s goal this year is to increase the number of social-cultural events as we continue to host guest speakers and academic events. I look forward in seeing all of you in our meetings and social events. Cheers and GO BEARS!

Treasurer: Yun Zhou
Yun Zhou was born August 1974 in Green Bay, Wisconson. After finishing the ordeal of high school, and taking Algebra I a total of 3 times, he decided to make his part time job as a film developer in an 1 hour photo store a full time commitment. Things went well for the next 6 years or so, until the photo store got squeezed out of business by a Wal-Mart that came to town a block away. By 1989, Yun decided to leave Wisconson for a promising career as a convinence store clerk at a 7-eleven in Hakensack, New York. However, the work hours were long, and the pay was not good. He had barely enough to cover his rent of a one room apartment over a bowling alley and a single meal a day. On a Saturday morning in 2004, at the age of 30, broken and without hope for the future, Yun decided that he had enough. Using his life savings, $74, he bought a bus ticket to Berkeley, California, never to look back again.
Today, Yun has a successful career pretending he is a student at Cal during the day, and panhandling for change at night on the corner of Durant and Telegraph. Maybe someday, he will get admitted to Cal, so he can pursue his dream of earning a Ph. D in the field of philosophy.
Secretary: Chester Chu
Hello! My name is Chester Chu, and it is an honor for me to be the secretary for SHKCA this year. This fall 2005 semester is my eighth semester in UC Berkeley. I am a physics, chemistry, and applied math triple major. Despite my scientific background, I am also interested in a variety of nonscientific fields such as sports, politics and history. In particular, I am extremely interested in the political aspects of pre-modern Chinese history. Nevertheless, biological and physical science discussions have not failed to amuse me. Influenced by a lot of my teachers in Hong Kong—the city where I was born and raised, I also enjoy teaching and tutoring tremendously. This is exactly why I am a study group leader and tutor at the StudentLearningCenter, despite the fact that I am actually quite stupid in reality. If you have any questions in your science and math classes, feel free to drop by and ask me. Finally, I wish you a wonderful year at Cal, and I will look forward to seeing you in our future SHKCA events!
Historian : Gary Lee
Hi everyone! Welcome to SHKCA, I’m Gary and my major is Linguistics. My interests in linguistics involve the languages of China and their histories, with a focus in Cantonese. Believe it or not, it is a fascinating field, and in the process of my studies I have learned a lot about China’s history. I was born in Hong Kong, but before I was a year old, I came to the United States, where I have lived for my entire life. Nevertheless, I have been back to visit several times, and I hope to spend more time there in the future. As for my time in involvement in SHKCA, this is actually my first time and I am glad to be a part of this club, because not only do you get to have fun with great people, but you also get to meet guest speakers, who may provide you with an insight to issues over in China and East Asia that you may have never considered. So we hope that you enjoy our social events and talks. Also, tell your friends about us, everyone is welcome!
Event Coordinator : Bonnie Jim
Hi everyone. My name is Bonnie Jim and I am a 3rd year Economics major. I started attending SHKCA meeting two years ago and found out that SHKCA is a really interesting and distinctive club. Not only did I make good friends in this club, I also explored different aspects of Chinese issues related to history, art, politics, business and economics. This is a good opportunity for me and you to stay informed. The fun social activities also provide great opportunity for me to get to know you better. I am really excited to join the SHKCA officer team. I look forward to seeing every one of you in our meetings. Feel free to stop by at our SHKCA table and check it out.
Public Relations: Ashley Chow -- Spring 2006
Hello, my name is Ashley Chow. I am a third year history major and Chinese minor here at Cal. I spent the Fall 2005 semester studying abroad at the University of Hong Kong. I am proud to be joining the SHKCA officer team this term in the public relations position. I look forward to meeting you at future club events, and I will be happy to share stories from my experiences abroad. Wish you a fun and successful spring semester!
Public Relations: Keith Lee -- Fall 2005
I am Keith Lee, a third year student double-majoring in Applied Math and Econ. Being born and raised in Hong Kong has naturally triggered my interest in the financial aspects of East Asia. Through SHKCA, not only have I been able to assuage my thirst for updates on the current economic issues in China and Hong Kong, but I have also had many opportunities to learn about the Chinese history and traditions. Honored and glad, I am the public relation of SHKCA this semester. However, I am going to study at the University of Hong Kong next semester, so I am sincerely looking forward to meeting you in the upcoming events in the rest of this semester! If you need to think of what to say when you approach me, simply ask me why I chose Hong Kong to study “abroad” even though I was born there.
P.S.: To those of you who received the e-mails about the past Game Night event several weeks ago, I have to apologize for misspelling Chinese Chess as “Chinese Cheese”. I guess cheese has never come from China. =)
